Hey guys do you have any photos or good suggestions on the proper technique of doing a push up, for example where to place your hands in relation to your body.

hands shoulder width apart so they are straight under your chest also with your back straight touch your chest almost to the ground and back up keeping your back straight is the most important part other than that it varies what part of the chest your trying to work you can do diamond pushups as well as normal ones

shoulder width is a good place to start, vary it to work different muscles (wider grip=more shoulders, less chest)

lay on the ground and thoughtlessly assume the push up position.

Your body will automatically stance itself to the best possible advantage.

That is how you should do your push up.

Keep in mind if you have dominant delts that these have to be 'switched' off, and it takes slow movements to work out how to contract the chest.

Does it work your chest more if you keep you hands further apart? I find that If I keep my hands shoulder width then all I am working is my tricepts.

there is no correct position for your hands to be when doing a pushup changing the position of your hands is just a variation of the exercise which you should do anyway to change up the exercise everyonce in a while but to start off just go shoulder width apart and then you can even have your hands in totatlly different positions if you wanted to, just mess around with it and try new techniques

close hands will work out your triceps, wide arms will work out your chest.

It's all relative to what you want to emphasize, be it pecs, delts, or tris. If you're talking about standard military PRT push-ups, then hands should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart at the level of your lower chest/nipples with a straight back/legs. Go all the way down and touch your chest then push back up so that your elbows are ALMOST locked out. Check out the Strength Builder Push-up System.
