What is it about soda that is so 'bad'? Is it the carbonation or the sugars?
And WHY is it bad?

Soda is bad for many reasons. carbonation not being one of them. Simple sugars are bad for obvious reasons, also caramel coloring is toxic to the liver and kidneys and mixed with aas can be bad. These calories are empty as beer is, if you want the caffeine take it in pill form much easier. Make sure its buffered its easier on the stomach.
the carbonation is bad for you. carbonic acid is why it is fizzy. i dont know that its that bad on your stomach though as your stomach secretes other types of acids anyway. i know its bad for your teeth though, especially mountain dew. ive read an article on this and im sorry not sure what it was from but i remember it saying that bottled iced tea is the worst (i know, its not soda) for your teeth and root beer is a better choice.
AAAHHHHHHH sugar , sugar, dooo dooo dooo, ahhhhh honey, honey, you ae my candy girl and you gave me a sugar rush !!!!

Soda = Liquid Candy!
What i mean, i guess, is how does it effect your workout? namely cardio/running.
kinda like asking why human shit is bad for you, oh wait...
Everything....
**** regular soda drink the diet stuff...
soda is suppose to be bad for your teeth and bones, osteoperosis. Im sure it's the carbonation & sugar but I know even diet soda is not good for you.
But you have to drink lots. I have 1-2 diet soda's at most during the day.
Most of the time I don't even touch it but when im dieting I crave something to drink other then water.

None of this is debatable by the soda manufacturers, but a few things bad I have heard/learned are:
- Extremely low PH can steal calcium ions from your teeth leaving them fragile and more susceptible to decay. Saliva can only protect the teeth if its pH is neutral. By acidifying it, you are actually inhibiting the enzymes present in saliva and activating the ones bacteria have. Couple that with sugar, and you probably will have some holes drilled on your teeth before you know it.
- The combined action of acidic PH + caramel color in coke can (and will) darken your teeth considerably
- The CO2 used in the carbonation process is not very soluble at the pressure inside the human body so it gets converted to HCO3- which, according to some, can acidify the blood as well. --> I don't really believe in this one though.
-Empty calories if you are not going diet.
- Aspartame and all the stories that keep coming up about it. The truth is that nobody knows if it can really cause cancer or not. Not to mention the fact that the body uses brain and fat cells to "store" chemical compounds it is not really sure how to metabolize, and aspartame falls in that category.
This effect cannot be felt overnight; it is the result of years of accumulation and build up of toxins in the human body that usually gets saturated when you're older.
That's all despite the horror stories of teeth getting dissolved after soaking for 1 wk in a bowl of diet coke, etc. etc.
- O yeah, the inside of the cans are coated with teflon. Don't need to say much else here do I?
BUT... I LIKE THEM!!
Like everything else in life, it comes down to how often and how much you do it. Just make sure you are not switching water for diet coke and you'll be fine!
