    immune system & steroids

Ok, rediculous question i know, but i am watching Sunday's CSI and the plot is about a bodybuilder who was murdered, in his house they found steroids and knew he was taking them, the plot is his immune system was severely compromised by the steroids, and mold in his house made him extremely sick as his immune system couldn't fight it

How true is this plot, do steroids really weaken the immune system?? Or is the story not really scientifically accurate...

another part of the plot is that the steroids caused his balls to be smaller, and a girl pissed him off and he decided to kill her, hmm....in the show they are dubbing his agression as "roid rage" this part of the plot sounds pretty contrived...

deca was one of the steroids on the show that they found in a syringe in his drawer...they cited this as making his immune system weaker actually!

it only took up a small part of the show....

First, this bodybuilder guy killed a girl, "roid rage" as they called because he was in bed with a girl, she said "one of your muscles is very small" And he got pissed and killed the girl.

That bullet hole caused high levels of mold to enter his home, which apparently the steroids severely weakened his immune system, and the mold made him very sick, much more than otherwise because the steroids significantly weakened the immune system as i said....

then this guy kills him [a guy kills the bodybuilder character], who apparently was involved with the first girl he killed or something. that was all i saw to it.

steroids boost the immune system by allowing the body to recover faster and ward off illnesses. Once again another hit below the belt by the media against steroids

I find that extremely suprising. In the past year i got sick once for about a day, and i think it was mostly due to springtime allergies.

It does lower your immune system. Take it from me, I am on week 4 of a pretty good sized cycle, by week 2 my face was swollen from having ear infections in both ears and i just finished my antibiotics and it is already coming back!

Not to steal the thread, and I think we would actually all like to hear this, but do supps such as green tea and such truley help to boost the immune system? If not what other supps would you reccomend to boost the immune system on cycle?

you get test flu b/c its your body's response to a foreign substance in your body. however, your body will learn to deal w/ it in a few day and adjust. Most steroids are medically manufactored drugs used to boost the immune system. That link wasn't exactlly a reputable source. This excerpt is taken from one of my pharmacology books on primobolan:

"Primobolan is an analog immune stimulating steriod used by patients with AIDS and other immune depressed systems to build the immune system and add lean muscle mass. ..."

Obiviously different steroids have different effects on the body. But most are used to help with illnesses.

I love that MTV show... I just watched it like the third time. It never fails someone is making fun of the "roid rage" fruit whenever we discuss "rage" on this site.

primo and deca have no effects on the immune. It seems as when u take androgens that affect the RBC the the ratio shifts the WBC lower. post cycle i always get sick now, and at my last apt, the mold got me sick when i was coming off.

i wanna bump this because i think it is something that many people misunderstand..... aas does definately weaken your immune system. and you really dont find a lot of threads about this fact. i read one about test flu being from the test in your body and your bodies reaction to this being foreign in your body. i think it is more of a suppression of your immune system thus being easier to come down with flu like symptoms or maybe its just both what do you guys think.

AAS does lower your immune system, especially prolonged use (found in HRT patients). Also intense training breaks down your central nervous system which must also ill efffect your IS.

    Heres something I read....

Athletes who use anabolic steroids to enhance their performance are putting their future health seriously at risk, the results of a new study indicate.

According to researchers, the use of these steroids may significantly increase a person's susceptibility to viral infections and different types of cancer, even if used at doses 50 times less than those commonly used by steroid abusers. This is because they weaken a vital part of the body's immune system.

The study involved 24 people, divided into two groups, who were based at a training camp. The participants in one of the groups were injected with an anabolic steroid, while the others were injected with a placebo. However the participants were not told which they had been injected with.

Both groups were then put through a training regime under the supervision of an Olympic standard coach. They were monitored for six weeks.

The researchers found that the effectiveness of NK (natural killer) cells, a type of white blood cell that is crucial to the body's immune system, was reduced by 20% in those who had been injected with steroids.

This reduction comes on top of the already reduced immune system that many athletes have through stressing their bodies with intensive training, according to Dr Robert Weatherby, who led the study at the Southern Cross University in Australia.

The research team believe that this 20% reduction in NK cell activity is probably even greater at the higher level of steroids normally taken by sports people and bodybuilders.

"Even at the doses we gave - 50 times less than those commonly used by athletes and bodybuilders - and for a period of only six weeks, the body's ability to defend itself against viruses and cancers is likely to be significantly lessened", Dr Weatherby said.

The researchers also discovered significant psychological changes in those who had been injected with steroids. Unlike other drugs, which merely alter mood for a short time, this study indicates that steroids may actually cause a change to human personality, something which is normally stable throughout life.

Those taking anabolic steroids were less empathetic towards other people and were also less sensitive to the effects of their actions on others.

    Interesting post TRD!

I would like to know what steroids they used for the test.

Because HIV/AIDs sufferes may be given deca plus other oral steroids (Anavar etc)

Yet most never get given plain Testosterone.

Guessing that is due to immune supression.
