Thread: So this is the response i got when i tried to help someone out...

So this is the response i got when i tried to help someone out...

in the gym today, there was this guy lifting, probably about my same age. I see him in the gym quite a bit, he is not very big at all, is fairly fat, but *tries* to move around excessively heavy weight (for him to use anyway), using the most horrible form!

so today he was doing quads and chest apparently, when he was doing his squats he loads the bar with 315 and squats down about 3-5 inches (no joke!)......later he does flat bench press with 155 lbs and goes down only about 1/3 of the way to his chest.......and then grunts when he's moving up the weight

i see him do this all the time and i THOUGHT that it would be a nice idea to offer some sincere, helpful advice to this guy. Or so i thought. Inbetween his sets i commented how he should go down further on his bench press, and lighten the weight if need be. I approached the guy in a very sincere manner. The response i get was "HEY BUDDY THE ONLY REASON UR BIG IS BECAUSE OF ALL UR DAMN STEROIDS. DRUGS WILL DO THAT TO ANYONE!" so after this i told him that he will never see any type of gains if he continues to work out this way, because he's not working any muscles to any extent.......then i get some more nasty comments, this time about how steroids are gonna kill me. Just to let you guys know i've never told him, so his comments were based on pure speculation. After this i told him to think what he wants about me, told him that drugs are not needed to get big , and quietly walked away.....

i'm a pretty calm, plesasnt guy and i remained that way throughout my "conversation" but i did feel like giving this guy a good fist afterwards...but really, i'm not that type of a guy and if i ever feel that way someone really has to be pissing me off.

shoulda told him that even steroids wouldnt bring you anywhere near his level...and then laugh at his weak attempt at 155 and tell him many pubescent boys lift that much

  3. #3
i wasn't really in the mood to start an argument with this guy...he clearly wanted to get back to his baby squats and minature bench presses, lol

Screw him bro.... If he does not want to learn and grow let him struggle with a 155bls and look like and ass!

funny thing is there was one time about 4 months ago i suggested to someone (who i am now buddies with) to fix up his form, he was very interested in what i had to tell him and when i saw him in the gym 2 days later, he told me his chest never was that sore after working out. Today he has told me he is 5 lbs heavier, and 4 months ago he could bench 165 for 4 reps (legit reps), today he can do 205 for 5 reps...and he's told me that if i (or someone else for that matter) never gave him good advice he'd still be at the same level. When i talked with him i gave him some diet advice too as he was only eating 3 meals a day, and the suggestion i made was to eat a sandwich before bed, and he has gained weight which is what he's wanted to do. I've made a pretty good friendship with him, and it all started from a few simple suggestions i made.

I always like to listen to everyones advise as long as its good. To bad that fat guy thought he was to good for you. I've seen guys do the same thing at my gym and they think they are pushing weight when they only lower it like 4 inches too. Sometimes I think of telling them to lower it to their chest, although Id bet $300 they wouldn't be able to lift it after that. Good luck next time

you know for the most part its best to leave people like this alone, because if they come in regularly, and never sem to improve on their form, that means that theyre not actively trying to improve on any aspect, nor are they reading on how to do something correctly.

Exactly. I have never spoken a word to anyone at the gym, unless I ask how many sets they have left. People will try to talk to me, I just nod but dont turn my music off. There is no point trying to give people advice, let them hire a personal trainer. I paid my mebership dues and I am there to train, no one else matters, I dont give a shit what they do there as long as they dont get in the way of my workout.

I have been the same way in the gym, i dont talk to anyone except the rare person I know from outside of the gym. After four years most of the people around my age just look at me like I am some asshole, haha. Im a pretty nice person but if I dont have anything to say I wont say anything.

That's why i don't talk to anyone in the gym.

People hated me at my old gym cus i come in.. say "good afternoon".. then go about my workout.

Most people can't take being 'helped'. No matter how sincere your demeanour it'll come off as condescending when they look at your killer arms and 6 pack.

    So why bother?

i hate it when people try to tell me what to do......i was doing an arm day and i was almost done but decided to do some alternating db curls......well i grab the weight i would normally use and i cant do a full 10 reps because im already exhausted and this fat guy trys to tell me to calm down and use the weight im comfortable with. he said "people dont know but u have to work the outside b4 the inside!" i said "OK" and slowly walked away.....

I was gonna start a thread about a guy the other day. He was about 55 years old..he had 545 on the bar and was squatting..seriously went down 2 inches..no joke. Grunted..did like 4 reps..then put it up. Did like 4 sets of that, then 405 2 sets, 315 2 sets, 225, 135. Interesting thing was..on the 135 set..he went down like 10 inches instead of 2. Interesting how that works I wanted to say something so badly, I just laughed but I doubt he saw me cuz I was on the other side of the gym.

Same thing happened at the gym with me the other day. Some idiot loads up 315 for squats and goes down a couple inches for like 3 reps. SO he decides to put another plate on each side...obviously he should have been taking one off not adding on but w/e, he starts to go down about an inch and just collapses to the floor, hes lucky he had to safety pins in or else KABLAMO he woulda been dust.

Yep. This dude set the pins seriously 5 feet high (this squat rack is dumb as hell, stupid gym that had to make do during spring break) and when he was setting them with the weight on the bar I was just laughing and waited so I could watch him OH also..he did no prior warm up.

I think it is also important to remember that even small things like eating a sandwhich before bed can make a huge difference and not all gains come from eating extra meals in the day. I personaly eat 3 a day including breakfast with a sandwhich before bead and at some other point in the day, along with 2 shakes and my gains are fine.

Saying that I suppose it also comes down to overall diet and training.

In conclusion fu*k that guy at the gym he is weak

Don't let the guy get to you. In the gym many out of shape people are extremely self conscious about how they look. Any comment he made, was most likely out of immediate embarrassment. It seems he lashed out at you before thinking, but the fact he is even in the gym shows he wants to look better. And if he made the comment about AAS, he is obviously jealous of anyone who looks built. If I were you I would just ignore him. If he is near you again, I would even apologize and let him know you were just trying to help him get the most out of his workouts. He may understand you were not doing anything to make fun of him, but actually trying to help. If so, he will also be embarrassed for being such an ass to you. Even if the biggest BB's in the world use AAS, wouldn't these be the guys to ask questions to regarding lifting? Aside from the AAS they also know how to properly lift and can obviously offer good advice. I just think his insecurity was just lashing out at you and not his real feelings.

I try to wear headphones... even if I'm not listening to music, it looks like I am. Thatway I don't have to talk to people.

I had this one guy, probably 16-17, and about 110-120lbs, 5'11ish. He does the warm up bench of 40lbs, for ten reps. Nice and clean. Then puts on 80lbs, and has the worst form ever.

Then when he's done, (he doesn't clean the bench, so I have to) I start doing my bench. Set the incline, and start doing it. Skinny boy comes up to me. I figure it's for advise. So I take my headphones off, and say hello to him. He then starts telling me how I'm doing it wrong, and how my form is bad, and how incline is bad and I shouldn't do it.

So I put my arm around the boy, and walk him over the a mirror without saying anything. I flex acouple of poses, mostly chest. Then poke him in the chest. I laughed alittle, then asked him "look in the mirror, who do you think is working out wrong?"

I walked away, and there were afew guys who saw it. They started a slow clap... next thing I know the whole gym is clapping. I felt really good that day. Plus I never saw that boy again.

I'm by no means as big as I want to be, and I don't openly offer advice at the gym, but I'm not going to be shown up by some skinny punk kid, who thinks he's ripped because he's 120lbs, and 10% body fat.
