    advice on a broken bone

    Hey everyone

i am curious to know if anyone, specifically kickboxers, but any fighter really..have ever broken any bones and had the healed bone continue to plague them? i am concerned that when my broken foot heals i am not going to be back at 100%. in detail i have broken my fifth metatarsal in half while in thailan last month.
the doctor said it should be fine and i should be able to go right back to training but i'm afraid that the place that healed will be weak and continue to break...and i don't think he fully comprehends what i do, most people think western kickboxing with all the pads and junk, mauy thai is a different ballgame...anybody who has ever accidentaly kicked an elbow will know what i'm talking about..the break is on my right leg too, and even though you are supposed to connect with your shin shit happens and i expect the top of my foot to withstand alot of damage..so anyway, anyone?

i am not a kick boxer but a powerlifter, broke my wrist years ago, radius, i feel nothing , doesntbother me, other people i know who have broken bones say that when it is damp it affects there old breaks,

when you get back give your foot some extra time, it will be weaker for some time and is more prone to reinjury, i would be more cautious for an extra 6-8wks

Cool thing muay thai is, i just came back from thailand three days ago training there and i know what you are saying exactly!
It happens to all of us when u go for a kick and it comes in at an angle and catches their elbow! Even though you threw the hit it is your oppnent who wins on the inflicting damage side!!
It usually happens to me on top of the ankle the way i kick so i get these painful bumps if the elbow catches a ligament or tendon but i never broke a bone, i think i did get minor stress fractures back in the day when i used to do taekwondo because then we did intentionally kick with the foot in order to slap the pads and make a noise loud enough to score points....the not so good old days of TKD!! The healing from those tiny fracs do cause rough cracking and popping at times but it doesnt hurt or hinder my moement so the doctor sais its ok to keep going.

Sorry back to Muay Thai, i am a fighter and i love to fight and compete, and when i am injured i am immedietly depressed and i want to get back into training ASAP! but what i've learnt is that u need to force yourself to take the time off and make sure everything is fully fully healed and take extra time too to make sure u dont go back too early. I have seen both cases, case 1: u take calcium supplemets and rest and wait for it to heal completly, the calcium supplement u should always take because for females u are in more need of it u will thank me whne u are older, and doing muay thai u need it even more, u will heal and go back to fighting and u will do great, just accept the time off and give your body the healing it deserves.
Case #2: i wish this doesnt happen but if it breaks more than once in the same area or place and u go back before it is 110% it could cause u a whole bunch of pain on the longterm and u dont want to live with painkillers and shots for the rest of your life! Not to mention u are stressing it more when it is not fully healed so it pretty much is partially injured always.

Advice for avoiding this accident in the future:
u cant complelty avoid it in muay thai because the hard contact is just part of this fight game but here are things that helped me.

1-if u are kicking to the legs or head then u are safe from elbows , but if u kick to the body/midsection then this is where u get caught so first of make sure u step in close to kick because even if they back up slightly u still catch them good and not their elbow gaurd while they are backing up.

2-Also when kicking to the midsection do not bring your leg up at a 45 degree angle! this way u are pointing your kick at the elbow! i mean dont turn the kick at the very end, instead bring the kick up like a front kick slightly away fom them and then when u are at the midsection height turn it 90 degrees pointing directly into them like u are going to cut them in half! this way if they block you will hit the side of the arm worst case senario, not the elbow from the bottom! It sounds slower but its actually just as fast if u train in it and safer for u.

3-Wear muay thai anklets and wrap your ankle several layers under them! the anklets look cool and they support your ankles and make your foot movements more accurate so why not use them and wrap your ankle an foot a few layers under them, even make a pad out of gause like u do for your knuckles and wrap over that, its very little padding i know but it could make a difference.

I wish u the best and fastest recovery and please take my advice when i say be careful cause i would rather u slow down and fight for another 20 years than u rush back before your ready and be out of the game in a few months!!

Also once u ae good to walk and exercise on your foot u dont need to go straight into heavy pad-work with it, work your boxing and knees and elbows, strengthen your other weapons while this one is getting better.

im not a fighter, but i have had 7 broken bones including my leg

my best advice to you is to stay on crutches as long as possible, i know it's torture, but it will only be for the best. Also go to a good physical therapist after it is healed. If you baby it, it should be fine

I used crutches for 2 weeks instead of 6 and i went to physical therapy twice, now my bone is somewhat deformed and my ankle cracks once a day just from walking. My ankle turns a lot easier now which is a pain in the ass. And yes, i do feel it aching when the weather is turning. I'm in my early 20's now, i can only imagine what its going to be like in 30 years.

Just take you doc's advice. stay off it and baby it, and it should turn out ok.

i have always been told that, but it is hard to actualy prove. i know this, when you first get the cast off, it wont be stronger, it will be MUCH weaker for sometime
