    dumbell presses vs millitary press

Is one of these better than the other for building the overall shoulders. I seem to find that when doing overhead bumbell presses the stabilizer muscles get a good workout but i also like to do the millatery press on the smith machine as i can handle more weight. Is one better than the other if you had to choose between the two ?

I would alternate them every other workout, but if I had to choose I would say DB's will probably give you more over-all development while the BB will give better over-all mass.

Basically, DB's require better form and really put the load just on your shoulders. You get a better range of motion with DB's.
With the BB, you can use a lot more weight and you can use other muscles to help push the weight. Form isn't as strict but you are increasing the load drastically.

What's the difference between development and mass you ask?
Look at it this way. Body Builders Vs. Power Lifters. Body Builders (who use very strict form) have better over-all muscle development/shape while most Power Lifters (who use very heavy loads with less stress on form) have enormous mass but not too much development of different body parts. You rarely see a Power lifter that is all cut up.

actually the definition is from diet... and genetics.. maruisz ptwnowskie is a prime example.

its powerlifters train the CNS and only the muscles they need to do the lift while a bb would spend more time perfecting his rear delts w/ minor isolative movements so that he has symmatry while a PL just gets mad weight and works on getting his overhead press up to par

hes a bad mofo...puts many bbers to shame and to bet he could probally outlift most of them by far

and further, many forget the original bber guys like franco and arnold were first and foremost powerlifters..many dont even know this

I prefer the bar (though I switch them up too) simply b/c going heavy on dbs it's difficult to keep my arms from leaning back. that is, keep proper form

i wouldnt suggest using the smith machine, i think that thing sucks, but thats JMO

i use barbell because dumbells cause my shoulders to swell...if i could use the dumbells i would

never do dumbell overhead without a spot!
