Angry Does anyone's math department at college not suck????

my text book likes to take G13 classified secret short cuts in example problems and not tell anyone about it.

NO professor teaching calculus can speak a god damn word of english. I am about to fail my exam tomarrow and i know it. I am getting a tutor this week. Which sucks. because i think calculus can be easy if you have a good teacher. This is a great inconvenience they are causing because the professors teaching calculus are incapable of teaching calculus.

it could be worse, your ORGANIC CHEM. teacher could only speak mandarin. like mine. you just gotta take it into your own hands. I found that "for dummies" series books really help

same problems here. my math teach was this lil lady whose english wasnt all that good and when she explained shit the class wouldnt understand a damn thing.

and i went to the math dep for tutoring, i ended up wit this weird lookin guy. he looked like he couldve been a serial rapist. anyway so he starts to talk and i get even more freaked out. he had a deep weird voice.. i couldnt wait to get outta there. never sat my foot in there since.

yeah, calculus is pretty tough, and having a bad teacher makes it much worse. thats too bad your teachers aren't good at teaching. my school has a very good staff in math and science

Don't worry you will probably be like me. The second time was always the charm with a C, I was just happy with a passing grade. Math was my worst ****en subject and I hated it.

This is the second professor i have gone through. THe other one's exams were easy as shit. He was so bad of a teacher, that even though the exams were extremely easy, half of the class got ZEROS on the fricking mid term because each problem was all or nothing grading. Dropped out of that class.

Then i get this guy, he;s a little better, but makes the toughest exams in the dept. He finds the most ****ed looking problems and makes the exam out of those.

i have pretty much given up studying for my exam i have today. i am already defeated

i ma currently in my third year of math minor (physics is also my major) and in my complex variables class i have had to teach myself EVEYRTHING becasue the teacher;s accent is so thick and her notes are completely haywire. Its a good thing taht my text is very good in eexplaining. If it was a more theoretical course i would have be in a royal crap

in my school i know a guy did it, but his marks were exceptional in everything else (like As and A+s, a smart mofo)

but im sure if u make enough of a clamour or rally support amongst your classmates
i would think that you would have an axe to grind because people are very lazy in this respect
many a time i have wanted to change teh time of a class and trying to rally support among peers was a very difficult task because some of them dont get it the first time you tell them. You ahev to explain over and over

yeah if you like your teacher, you'll like what hes teaching, as hard as organic chem was and as much as i thought i hated it the teacher was good and i got a b. math has always been my worst subject though, but never forget like the greek mathemetician pythagreous said "numbers are the world" .. or some stupid shit like that.. someone should have clubbed his ass with a dinasour bone. (not good as spelling either.. or history)

Sometimes it’s better to cut your losses and withdraw from the class. Find out which teacher(s) from the ones available are going to be the best fit for you and plan your schedule around their classes. After dealing with some horrible teachers I finally found an adjunct guy that could speak English, didn't have an attitude towards the mathematically challenged, and believed in using the tools available to accomplish the job. (IE: in the real world reference text, calculators, etc. are available so the use of these items are encouraged for homework, tests, and even the final exam)

    1. I wouldnt mind if a mod changed the title of this thread and took out the 4 letter word and replaced it with the big one or somthing. i was real pissed when i made this

    2. 3-4 of us complained ealier in the year, they are not doing anything about it but at least we tried. I should have jsut listened to my friends though. their suggestion to just say **** it and take the class over summer in a community college

    3. Johan- we pay by the quarter (most schools have semesters, we have quarters)

we must pay to retake the class

He could be worse at teaching but he is still pretty bad. his exams are just unrealistic, and a buddy of mine who had him sais he doesnt curve at all.

honostly dude, my head spins when i try to learn from the book. I understand the example problems, but when i get to the end the exercises, where the impossible problems lie, i just look at em like what the ****, where in the **** do i look in the book to learn how to solve these, and those are the only difficulty level of problems on the exam.

I've talked to alot of math profs and taken quite a few math courses and I've had a difficult time coming up with an explanation as to why Math Depts. in general are so bad. And if you think back to the previous courses that you've taken, it always seems like at the time you were taking it, the course was incredibly hard, yet when you look back on it, the stuff you were doing was actually pretty easy, and it should be easy to begin with if you have a good teacher. Math can actually be really fun and worthwhile if you have a good teacher, or useless if you have a bad teacher

I think the main reason for bad math profs is because every major is going to be required to take at least one math course. So although there are very few math majors (if you don't count those trying to become math teachers) there is this huge demand for math profs and TAs because they require all undergrads to take math courses. So they have to find a lot of math profs to teach all these courses. Now American students (in general) just care about the money so they don't pursue math PhD's (Most math research is generally not funded). So, Math Depts have to look abroad to fill these positions and its a way for some of these profs a chance to work in academics since they wouldn't have a chance in industry.

I remember I was in the Math Graduate Director's office while he was talking to his secretary, and basically this conversation was about how one of their math profs failed her speak test at the beginning of the semester and how they were hoping that she would pass it now otherwise she would be basically forced to leave, and they hoped that her english was much better now after she had been teaching for a semester. How the F*ck they let her teach for a semester when she failed a speak test is way beyond me (Speak test is like very basic general english skills). But like I said before, there is this basic demand for math teachers in academics, and getting into math grad school is typically easier than other majors because they need TAs.

Ok, I think thats the end of my rant. (By the way, I'm talking about MSU. I actually did have good math prof's at the local community college when I took calc 1-3 in high school)

By the way, just a thought after I made this rant. A Dow scientist that I spoke with asked someone from the business college how they try to attract students to their college, and he was basically laughed at since the business college is turning away half the people that apply. I think when people talk about encouraging more students to major in science/egr fields, the way math is taught should be looked at because it really can be a lot of fun instead of turning ppl into non-math fields because of a bad experience.

all of my college professors teachers have been fluent speakers of english. I had a very good math teacher for calc 1 and 2. a not so good linear alegebra teacher and bad vector calc teacher. i avoided Applied Boundary-Value Problems b/c it was taught by an engineering teacher i really didn't like. overall math has been best subject and would like to take some more in grad school.
