    Protein in hot water...

Can you mix protein in hot water? I like hot drinks and was hoping I could sometimes turn my chocolate and coffee proteins into hot cocoa or cappucino. But will it degrade the protein or enzymes in my protein mixes?

I think it depends on how hot the water is. I mix mine with oatmeal and I have been told it does not effect it as long as I do not cook it with the oats. If you just have hot water and add it I think you should be okay just don't mix it and then heat.

Dry protein powders are not as prone to denaturation as are other protein sources. Some protein powders are stable at temps of up to 100 degrees C. The amino acid profile of the protein plays a large part in it's susceptibility to denaturation. The more hydrophobic amino acids such as valine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, etc. stabilize the structure during heat exposure. Regardless, as oldman said, unless you've got the stuff cookin' on the sun, you should probably be okay.

I love this one in the winter:

Mix chocolate flavored Protein shake with hot lowfat milk.

I mix chocolate Casein protein with hot water all the time. It makes it taste like a hot chocolate which is much better than drinking it cold. It also helps to dissolve the protein powder.

I don't think there is any issue with doing this.

Extreme Blends at World's Gym has hot mocha and hot chocolate protein and meal replacement shakes on their menu. These are quite popular especially in the winter.
