Wink How complete is kenpo karate

Are there knee strikes, leg kicks? submissions?

I know there are a lot of weird names for the techniques.

All if all i its incomplete i can still practice leg kicks and knees at home, i do plan to buy a punching bag that is waterbase and you can leg kick on it.

I dont know if the fights are full contact or they are just free fights.

I did not have the chance to go back to the school since its been close cause they have moved and are openning Monday, i did see where they moved and its a lot bigger, there is a ring for kickboxing, and some really nice matts for the jiu jitsu classes.

What i could see true the window has well is that there are some cardio vascular equipement, bikes, stairmasters and more, i did not see any weights, the dojo is spread true 4 big locals. There will also be aikido, tae chi, tae bo and they announed that a lot more is coming soon so crossing my fingers that they where talking about muay thai and MMA classes.

i woulnd't just train in one art personally. I'd do BJJ + something standup. This might be good for the stand up part... dunno

Kenpo is good for self-defense in the street, its kinda dirty but realistic. No submissions, plenty of kicks, punches, eye gouges/slashes, groin strikes, arm breaks, etc..

Depends. The Ed Parker founded Kenpo Karate academy here in town is incorporating "submission grappling" in their program now. I don't think they'll win any jits tourneys anytime soon, but at least they're evolving. They mostly specialize in kicks, punches, knees, elbows, ect.
Not sure about how much variance there is from school to school though.

Isn't kenpo very similar in technique to krav maga? A buddy of mine was raving about it.

    Muaythai.
Of course muaythai is better and MMA classes but has i said there are no school in my area, and i have to go with what is there.

This is why i am asking about Kenpo karate to be sure its not crap and that i dont spend my 45$ doing forms instead of sparring.

Cause if this is the case i will get back in Tae Kwon Do and get my black belt within a year, i am already blue belt in the art and took me 7 years to get there but now has crappy has it is it would take me 6 months to get to red and black.

You might ask around also. Sometimes you can find clubs and groups that just do informal garage training on some mats and some instructional dvd's. You probably won't find top notch instructions that way, but it's a great way to learn basics in grappling for free/cheap.

Kenpo Karate is a traditional MA / geared towards self-defence

i can guarntee you, any sparring will be ridiculously watered down, dont bother taking it unless you plan on competing in karate tournaments

That being said, i have a friend of mine who's a karate blackbelt and he is friggan AMAZING at closing the gap and performing "first strikes" - outstanding distancing

The trick is training in something that your passionate for, and having good bunch of guys to train with in your club

That is what i am afraid has well, i did tkd for 7 years but it was full contact, before that it was kyo kushin, also did shotokan for 6 months and i just hated the point system really dumb.

I will buy a punching bag the ones you can leg kick, and i have the bas rutten cds, and of course the billy blanks bootcamp dvds thoses might sound ridiculous but man in the ultimate bootcamp you got a lot of squats, push ups, and more and the heart pumps like hell and all the muscles are worked after this 55 minutes dvd.

    Where what when???

You guys are right the Muay Thai is quit amazing, the kenpo school just moved and when i spoke to the sensei he told me that there should be a lot more martial arts starting in September.

There is also kickboxing at that school and jiu jitsu.

I will continue to search i guess for some muay thai around my area, who knows martial arts are in vogue right now and there is no telling when a school might open.

I really have mixed feelings about kenpo, i just hate the damn kata forms and there even weapons, i was used to spar for about 5 hours a week when i was training in tkd, the Saturday class was 3 hours of sparring and Friday night was 2 hours apart from the regular classes we add Tuesday and Thursday nights where we add 30 minutes of sparring there.

What i saw from the kenpo school it that its very flashy, they are all over the place competing but they compete in forms, weapons and muscial which i dont have any interest, in fact i dont have any interest in competing again at 34 i wanna be in great shape but still be able to kick ass LOL.

Thanks everyone for the feedback i will keep you guys posted on what ever happens this September.

melvin guillard from TUF2 beat this guy named rick davis last night. the guy was beyond a can, he was like standing sideways like daniel-san and then melvin caught him with an overhand right and the guy faceplanted.

Juste saw the fight, yeah that Davis guy add a weird fighting stance and was no match for Guillard.

THe fight stance is pertty much what they use in point system karate, and it does suck, i got the bas rutten dvd and cd at home and i add a hard time changing my stance has well, the front stance.

I must give Davis credit for a 36 year old he is in great shape, and i saw that he has Heath Herring and Frank Mir in is training camp, they both come from that Las Vegas School, so he does not have any excuses for this bad stance.

At first i tought he was just a kenpo guy but if he trains with theses guys he must have a rounded base.
