Rule of thumb for Tuna to avoid Mercury Poisening

Is it no more than once a day or three times a week. I've heard both. Anyone know?

Over consumption of tuna (especially white albacore) can raise the mercury level in your blood. However, it doesn't become toxic until you get past 50ppm. And some people are more susceptable to the side effects of mercury than others. The FDA I believe suggests limiting the ammount of tuna you eat to 2 cans per week...yes 2 cans per week. I had a blood test done a while back when I was eating about 2 cans a day for over a year and although the levels of mercury were elevated, my doc said they were not high enough to be toxic. Don't stop eating it, but don't get silly with it.

chunk light has about a third the mercury that the solid white albacore does, so i eat that. and its a little cheaper and chopped up more and easier to eat IMO.

but sometimes i find surprises in it like ribs and skulls and pieces of bone...just crunch through em!
