    question on shakes with maltodextrin

i know maltodextrin has a high GI and that because of it, it's usually only a good idea to consume PWO. the kind i have is cytogainer, and regretfully the company doesn't have the numbers as far as the GI of the gainer.

now, i use this stuff PWO, but also on days I don't work out. so, just wondering if drinking the shake over a long period of time, say an hour or so, will be adequate enough to slow down the digestion of the carbs and prevent an insulin spike? would seem to make sense to me, but then again i don't know a whole lot about insulin spikes and the like.

i know people tend to say to avoid things that are high GI, but considering the shakes have a lot of protein, which i know slow down the digestion of carbs, plus the fact that i eat every couple of hours, i would imagine that just drinking the shake very gradually should be adequate enough to prevent fat storage concerns. well, anyone who can give me more info on this, i'd appreciate it.

Shakes in general will not be friendly towars insulin. As they are quickly digested. mY advice to you when drinking these shakes would be to perhaps drink down some fiber before hand. This may slow gastric emptying and alter the GI response.

thanks for the info. actually, after some research, i was thinking of changing my shakes to whey protein blended with oats. that way, it's high quality protein, low GI carbs, and should be far superior to the cytogainer i'm currently using.

i think i'll still use the cytogainer for PWO, but for the other days something lower GI would seem to be a far better choice.

just wondering if you know of any links to anymore info on the fiber and how it affects the GI? just wondering how significantly it will do it and how much would be necessary to do so? i have some of that "psyllium seed husk" fiber powder and figured i can try taking that down before the shakes?

as far as PWO, i shouldn't take the fiber though right, as i want the carbs to replenish the lost blood glucose and muscle glycogen as fast as possible? thanks again and any info you could provide on all this would be much appreciated.

PWO fiber and/or fat is not a good idea, no.
