I quit cold turkey. I'd love to tell you I am still off them, but that would be a lie. I lasted nearly 3 years b4 I cracked. I'd love to give them up again, but my heart isn't in it.

I found that it was easy to do IF you changed the things associated with "having a fag"

For example, I always smoked when driving to appointments etc. I banned myself from smoking in the car. Could have one when I got out, but not in the car.

I also liked a ciggie with an alcoholic beverage. So I decided to stop drinking for a couple of weeks.

I also stopped seeing my smoking buddies for a few weeks too.

You will be amazed at how quick you "forget" to have a cigerette, thereby you eventually give up.

I did and I never even "fancy one" like the people I know who went cold turkey.

Good luck giving them up bro'

    ....I haven't smoked in over 12 years...The 4 keys for me were:
    1) Make up your mind that you're done with tobacco.
    2) Get rid of your cigarettes.
    3) Don't buy any more tobacco products.
    4) Remind yourself that you have quit (PERMANENTLY) and tell yourself that you won't show your weakness by bumming a smoke from someone else.

..and I never used a patch or Zyban....When I decided to quit, I couldn't see the logic of continuing to feed the addiction to nicotine...

I guess it depends on the individual. Everytime i try to quit i usually bum a smoke from someone at some point throughout the day which isnt a good idea. I will give that a shot and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice almostgone.

You got to look at this from a realistic point of view. Are they good for you?
Will they possibly kill you. Will they damage your lungs. Will they offend any
one around you. Do you have people that second hand smoke will hurt.

Be a man and just quit. Cold Turkey! F--- all the pills, and patches and
commercial b.s. In 4 days all the physical addiction will be gone and you
will be on the road to a better life style. Sorry for the preaching!
Guess you will do what you want anyway. Good Luck!

    It's hard w/out a freakin' doubt.

The good thing is that once you make it past the first 2-3-4 days, not only is the physical desire leaving the body, but mentally you will be very proud of what you are accomplishing and that gives you even more fuel to quit. I smoked when I was in my young 20's, then quit when I saw the autopsy on my Uncle and they showed me what his lungs looked like. Looked like a tri-tip left on a BBQ pit for 5 hours.

I equate it to dieting and getting up and doing a.m. cardio. The first week it's a bitch, especially the cardio, but once you have done it for a while and begin to see the results, it becomes something you WANT to do instead of HAVE to do. That's when it's safe to say that you are pretty much in the clear.

i think it may be easier if you re bulking. whenever you want to smoke, drink a glass of water and eat something! it will ease the hand-to-mouth addiction, i think it may help.

I cant stand it anymore........im always having chest pains, its taking a big toll on working out and my cardio. Sometimes i cant even do cardio for more than like 15 minutes bacuse i get so out of breath. I also have been taking this brazilian jiu jitsu class and i'll tell ya what by the end of the class i feel like im just gonna colapse and pass out from breathing so heavy. Anyways thanks again guys i appreciate it.

It seems like everyone here is pro cold turkey, but I don't know I've never smoked. My brother quit and he used Zyban, and he said that it worked really well for him.

Is that something that has to be prescribed to you by a doctor?

I quit about 6 months ago. I just quit cold turkey and the only advice I can give you is that when you want to smoke, you must acknowledge how strong the addiction is, and think about if you do smoke that next cigarette, how much more difficult it will be to quite the next time.

I know that was long, but I will try again to explain another way.

If you want to quite and you are able to stop for a few days, by cheating, you are only making it more difficult to actually quit. If you want a cigarette, you should realize that if you dont smoke, that desire will slowly go away. But if you do smoke, you will have to wait for days, just to get back to where you were before you smoked that last one. Therefore whenever I want to smoke, I think about the wasted time of trying in the past that would have been wasted time.

Another easier way to look at it is just quite for a while. Even if you can only quite for a week, month or even a few months. I am sure you are helping your lungs considerably and allowing them to reguvinate somewhat. Any day not smoking is a healthier day than when you do.

    Good Luck!

start running a mile every day. that really helped me stop smoking because first off you know that the longer you've gone without smoking the better your lungs function, but also if you start craving one you can say "**** it i'm going for a run instead" i'm at the point now where i run at least 3 miles every time i go out jogging and i know there's no way i could run 3 miles fast if i were still a smoker.

Try to stop cold turkey and remember it is only a 3 day window but if you don't have the mind-power to do soo then do what I did and do a reverse type pyrmamid cycle with your smoking habits. Limit yourself to a certain amount of cigs each day and every day or so subtract 1 from that amount and eventually you come to none. It worked for me and is alot less stressful than cold turkey soo hopefully it could help you out too bro.

it is a hard thing. i found if you change your daily routine it makes it easier, smoking or chewing are a habbit that become a lifestyle, if you dont allow your self the time to smoke or chew and you keep busy and not follow your regular schedule for a few wk, it makes it alot easier

Thank you all for the input. I made up my mind and i am just gonna do it cold turkey. When i was younger i had a serious drug problem for a long time. I was forced to quit cold turkey in jail. I was thinking about it earlier today that if i was able to go through all of that crap.........being sick, my body in the absolute worst pain ive ever had, throwing up constantly, only getting maybe 2 hours of sleep a night for about two weeks and not being able to eat anything, i think i'll be able to quit smoking. I have a couple of smokes left out of this pack and i will finish them tonight and i will start tomorrow. Thanks again you guys.

I smoked for about 9 years. I used to quit for 6 months here and there, but inevitably I always started back up. I even tried going on Zyban... gave me really fvcked up dreams, sometimes insomnia, I heard some people died from taking it.. I gather they were taking other medications at the time as well but I"m not too sure the causes.. . It was originally a drug prescribed for depression but they found that those who smoked while taking it had been quitting, so they reintroduced it... that's the gist anyway...

When I finally quit for good.. 3 months ago. I'd just had enough, and started doing mad cardio... I knew I wouldn't be able to improve my body without the extra cardio, and I couldn't continue smoking and working out that hard.. and that was the best way for me to quit. Never even had any cravings... didn't really have time with all the gym time I was putting in... I think I'd just had enough.

Good luck Dude... you can do it!

started smoking when i was 13 (35 yo right now). Tried the patch didn't work. I finally quit cold turkey lasted almost 7 years(smoking 2 packs marlboro reds a day). I been hooked again for 2 years(smoking 1 pack marlboro lights 100 per day). Damn things are killing me and hindering my work out. amazing the things are legal as addictive as they r.

Well ive been trying and it didnt work out to well. I ended up going to the doc's office because i had this pain on the right side of my chest and the doc thinks it some sort of blister or something on my lung, (not a good thing). I actually just started a thread on this in the lounge. My doctor said that he is trying get me on this medication that is new and isnt out yet but hes trying to get it for me. Its called chantix and its suppose to be the best stuff right now to help people quit smoking. Somehow he said that theres a chance if you smoke while taking this medicine that you could get sick so that should be a good enough incentive to not smoke while taking it. I'll let ya guys know how it works when i get it.
    Thanks for the replies though!
