DVD's on the computer...

Howdy,

I was wondering how I can copy a DVD straight to the hard drive and watch it off the hard drive. I'm doing it the simple way, but it doesn't seem to work.

For example, I got a movie from my friend, put it in DVD reader, and then I copy/pasted the ENTIRE DVD onto my hard drive, exactly as is. In it's own folder, and it has it's own two, as they usually say something like "Jacket_P" and "Video_P"

Now, when you try to open one of these files, the movie file itself, which I believe is in VOB format, it will open it up and the picture will either NOT be there at all, or it will be all blurred up and pixel's like crazy all over the place, and yet, the SOUND works fine apparently. I used different programs like ATI DVD Media, and also Power DVD which I heard is one of the better ones, and both have this problem.

Is this a securty feature? Like on the DVD to protect copy-right stuff? Do I have to use a specific program just to copy the DVD? Also, if I were to burn the VOB files AS A DVD movie, onto a DVD disk, would it technically work? Reason I ask and not just "test" is cuz the damn thing takes so long and the 8 GIG DVD'S sell for about 4 dollars each, so I don't want to waste them.

There is a WHOLE lot of encoding on a dvd. So the way you are trying it won't work. If you go to the tech section there's a few threads on it. There are some how to's on www.doom9.org (site made soley for the purpose of making back up copies of dvd's ...etc...etc.) Dvdshrink is going to be your main tool. It will decode 70% of modern movies and make it into an image file (*.iso). It will also reduce the quality (not by much) and strip features so that you can fit it on 1 4.7 gig dvd. You can use programs like daemon tools to mount that image as a virtual drive to view it without burning it if you don't want to waste a 4.7 gig dvd.

get DVD Shrink like he said. you can either rip the DVD into an iso on your hard drive or have the VOB, IFO, BUP, etc. files in one folder. (if you want to watch them from your hard drive do the latter one - cause you can just reopen dvd shrink to watch the movie stored on your hard drive (but you can't open an iso)).

once you've ripped the DVD to your hard drive you can either burn the movie, leave it as it is, or convert it into divx format (basically just one big avi file that you can watch - saves space, a lot).

I downloaded the program, and I think I still have problems.

First, when I try to open a DVD from the drive (like Pink Panther DVD), it will open it, and as it is trying to "read" the disc or whatever, it gives me an error. So it won't even access the DVD for me through my drive.

I also CAN NOT directly copy the contents of the DVD to my hard drive first, because again, while copying the file, Windows Explorer gives me an error saying "Cannot Copy VOB_2_1..." or something like that.

So I'm stuck. Not only can't I copy the files, but the DVD Shrink program won't even do anything. Am I missing something?

like i said earlier... youc an't just copy it over ... there is encryption involved and that method just doesn't work. Forget about that method


As far as trying to "read" the disc...unfortunately disney and sony has a more difficult encyrption that dvdshrink doesn't do. You'll run into this problem from time to time. Download a program from doom9.org called dvd fab decrypter. It's the easiest method for newbs. It will make an iso file. You can then use dvd shrink if you have limited space on your hd and want to shrink the movie to fit on a 4.7 dvd.

just keep in mind. In the future...try dvd shrink first and if that doens't work then try dvd fab. Dvd fab is sloowwww in comparison so it's best to try dvd shrink first.
