    sweet potatoe vs. yams ?

    Hi,
wondering if anyone knows the diff. between sweet potatoes and yams,Health wise.
Sweet potatoes are difficult for me to eat (nasty) I find the yams alot tastier with a better consistency inside.

    Are you USA-based?

If so what y'all call 'yams' and 'sweet-potatoes' are different varieties of the same tuber.

I believe the only 'major' difference between the two may be the beta-carotene content

If you were caribbean based (or CA/SA based) you'd have access to actual yams... They differ from sweet potatoes in consistency.. beta-carotene.. and something else that's eluding me right now

As to your question tho, 'healthwise' the'd be almost equivalent imo

Are we talking about real yams here?

Sweet potatoes have more beta-C (the deeper the yellow the better) and fiber.

Yam, real yams are high in fiber but low in beta-C.

Chest, I'm with you. Assuming sweet potatos are the "yellow" ones and yams are the "orangish-red" ones, as Nark said it changes depending on where your from.

Kinda like fĂștbol in Mexico = soccer in America

Yams, I don't like at all. Sweet potatoes are god's gift to bodybuilders.

My family always made "candied yams" on thanksgiving which is just yams/SP basked (skins off) with brown sugar. when cooked they come out with a candy type coating over them. Taste good but way too much sugar. Maybe I should use Brown-Nutrasweet

Here is a chart I found showing the differences between the two for all you hard core dieters and an interesting write up on sweet potatos.
Thank you for clarifying the "source"... I hope you didn't look past what I mentioned in the above. Enjoy.
