    Are 35 LB dumbells the most one can use for flys?

    A huge weightlifter told me at 35 LB's, flys start turning into dumbell

    press's. He said it's due to the stress on the elbow joint. He said he didn't

    gain any muscle. He now benches 355 LB's. He used to do flies. He

    said flies are a waste. Is it possible to use more than 35 LB's for flies

    without excessive bending of elbows?

    i love flys, its my favorite chest exercise. i usually do 12-15 reps w/40 lbs. if done wrong it can be dangerous for the shoulders. keep elbows slightly bent and don't stretch past back w/weight. a lot of guys bend their elbows too much and are really doing presses.

    i read an artlicle with ronnie in it they asked him why he doesnt do db flys and he said becuase he doesnt have too. thought that was pretty funny but when you go heavy its alot harder to focus on the actually fly movement i get a weight that is a bit more controllable

    When I throw pec decks or flies in my chest workout I get pumped as hell. This guy must have gotten injured doing this. Now he is telling you that it dose'nt work. what a dushbag. Its probly one of the best for the chest

    when i started going really heavy on flyes i improved my chest very much. i use 55's and sometimes 60's right now. i dont agree that flyes are a wasted movement, i love 'em.

    dont listen to the big dude. just because he is big does not mean everything he says about training is gospel. i dont do dumbbell flyes that often, but when i do, i tend to use 45lbs for about 12 good reps, with elbows nearly straight. if i did them regularly im sure that number would increase

    hell yeah I do db flyes. And 35 lbs is the most you can do w/out turning it into a press? WTF!! Tell that shit to Arnold, his chest was enormous and flyes were a staple in his workouts.

    i don't know why he told you that. not that flyes should really be a staple in your training in terms of mass builders, BUT if you can go higher in weight, ALWAYS DO THAT! back when i wasn't dieting, i could get the 60's a few times....hard as ****, but i could do it.

    also, in terms of keeping your elbows straight....uhhmm...i've never kept my arms straight doing these, i think your elbow should have a slight bend in it. i go wide as hell, but they still have a slight bend. doing them without a bend seems like it would rip your bicep.

    a waste? thts a dumb comment. 35 lbs sounds like bs, unless u have an elbow injury. plenty of guys (inlcuding me) use flys as a staple of their chest routine. i find it isolates the pecs much beter thn presses

    I use 50's with proper form. 35 would be just more than a warmup and i'm not even that huge.

    This is a pretty obvious thread, but for those saying flyes should not be used i totally disagree. Although not the staple for a well developed chest they should be used. The pectoralis major's primary povement is horizontal adduction which is the motion of the flyes. The muscle fibers of the chest are mostly horizontal so why would you not do some sort of fly, be it cable or db's

    iv also changed my training mentallity to this


    I started doing shrugs with 30-40 reps and my traps grew insanely compared ot anything else.

    so i decided to change my WHOLE regimen to this. 20-30 reps for each exercise..

    side raises...let me tell you..after 30 reps with 35-40 lbs...it feels like lightning

    DC calles 20 reppers widowmakers. ever try them with squats? wow. talk about being crippled,lol. you can do them with pretty much every exercise.

    20 -rep squats were my staple for 4 years.. come to think of it.. my leg routine is still chock full of high rep squatting

    they should be standard issue imo.

    i do 2 warmup sets of 20-25 reps with 35's. i go up to 50's for 12.

    and yes you can, but this is an exercise where you are feeling it not seeing how much you can do, do too much and you wont be doing em or other chest stuff for a while.

    possible, but for the average person, not probable. i do agree that flyes are a waste, i get crap out of them, imo, there are a lot better assistance exercises

    No one should make many blanket remarks like that. But the one you heard was obvioiusly false. I will not argue the importance, although I love flys, but 35 is probably his maximum before losing form due to a past injury. 35's really isnt very much for this exercise.

    I don't think it has anything to do with ego.

    Personally i don't see the point of going that high in reps on this exercise.

    The only thing i'd concede is that form should be tight... and mine always is.

    35 lbs max; are you kidding? That "big guy", in your gym is full of BS! I've been using fly's off and on in my routine for years. I've worked up to 75 lbs DB's for 12 reps using near perfect form. Of course I didn't start out with this weight. I love fly's. They make the striations in my chest stand out like ropes. I think they are what gives my chest that deep seperation as well.

    Bottom line; if you like them and are getting results using them then use them. Go as heavy as you need to and progressivly add weight, sets, change rest intervals just like any other movement.

    I say its bs unless he scrwd up doing bad form. I'm scrawning 150 and I can do 40s with great form..love it. Could even do 35's when i weighed 130 a few months ago.
