Well there are few reason they demoted it. For one unlike all other planets it doesnt orbit in a round speherical shape around the sun, it's skewed or eccentric and overlaps I believe a few other planets like neptune. Here is the definition of a planet: “A celestial body in orbit around the Sun that has sufficient gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium [nearly round] shape and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.” So Pluto fails to meet this definition.
It's basically a ball of ice and if Pluto is a planet then there are at least 50-100 other balls of ice in the vicinity of Pluto, Kuiper belt, that as well should be recognized as planets. So if we look at the reciprocal situation, we could demote one minor planet or promote an indefinite, infinite amount of celestial bodies.
