Anyone have a HD DVD player? How's the quality over regular DVD. I'd assume it would be way better?

i heard mixed emotions about HD DVD players so i figured id wait till more movies came out HD...ill stick to my INHD for the best clarity
i heard good things also.but making higher quality dvds, its just a matter of altering the compresion ratio of the mpeg2(dvd stream) i think.Originally Posted by rbehniwal
INHD and INHD2 is very nice. I also like the nature shows on PBSHD. My cable provider is ass backwards and doesn't carry Discovery HD.Originally Posted by aadrenaline

From what I read the cheapest Blue ray player will be the PS3. For general use I'd wait and get that versus a stand alone player for $1,000.
By the way, I get a very nice Sony discount and I don't mind sharing it.![]()

Blu- ray's have alot of problem actually. HD-DVD currently is in the lead based on quality by far.

Alot of the DVD's don't look like blu-ray dvd's i can name a few star wars and unforgiven both were tested and compared side by side on 60in plasma the quality in some movies is not up to par. Also there was lagging in some dvds. But by quality i mean these ppl are very picky they look at facial features etc to the avg consumer they look fine.
Right now Toshiba's HD-DVD is edging out the blu-ray because of the compression technique used. HD-DVD is limited to 28GB or something around there. At the moment blu-ray discs are only being printed in their 32gb discs. which once printed in dual layers will be ~60gb. In the end my bet is on blu-ray.
At the moment neither player will output at 1080p either. I will be buying the ps3 in november. and then purchasing a Sony 60XBR2 once the prices drop.
Cool man. Nice TV. I have a 40" XBR LCD. It can't do 1080p but I can always get new one.Originally Posted by Psychotron

On a side note, uncompressed 1080p content would require 24bits/pixel x 1920 x 1080 x 24frames/sec = 1,194,393,600bits/sec or 149,299,200bytes/sec so you transfer 149Mbyte/sec
so what a 1.5hour movie would require 149Mbyte/sec * 1.5 * 60 * 60 =
806,215,680,000bytes or a disc with the capacity of 806GB for uncompressed HD content heh.
screw that, i got over 200 DVD's i dont plan on re-buying them so they are HD!!

The player can up convert them. It won't look as good as true HD content but it will look better than standard 480p.Originally Posted by SVTMuscle

I'm gonna hold off on the HD dvd players for now. Don't want to end up with something like a Beta, where it becomes obsolite in alittle while.

I think it's gonna go the blu ray route but you never know....

Yeah, I bought a beta at a garage sale afew years ago. It works great, better quality than VHS, but the tapes are so short you have to keep changing them. THe 2 hour movies I have for it, come on two tapes... which is a pain in the ass.Originally Posted by zimmy
I also have a laser disc, with two movies. It's great, but same thing, the movies have to be flipped half way through.![]()
Yes. We purchased a Samsung 40" LCD Flat Panel and we bought the blu ray to match it.Originally Posted by Carlos_E
