Expat, I had this problem and here is your salvation:
- No Coffee
- No Alcohol
- No Tomatos or peppers
- If you can get a prescription for Nexium, your problem is solved, if not, you will want to start on the Prilosec OTC 2x a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
- NO SMOKING!!!!
Here is the deal, you NEED to do several things to get yourself in line. Start the Prilosec right away. Take the medicine 1 hour before your meal as food interferes with the absorption of the med. Avoid coffee, alcohol, spicy foods, fatty foods, and indigestible foods (tomato, peppers, corn all have a skin that is not digestable by humans and are irritants), for at least 30 days. Take the Prilosec twice a day, every day, don't skip any. Within 4 days to 1 week you should be cool and reflux free. Watch your diet. Quit smoking (yeah, I know, do it anyway)
You probably have erosive damage to your esophagus so really, it's good that you are getting to the Gastroenterologist for the endoscopy, the sig is a pain in the butt for the prep but it's worth it, once in a while anyway. The endoscopy is basically a scope down your throat to inspect the esophegeal sphincter. It's no big deal as it is done under a light anesthesia so there is no feeling anything, just a nap. You might have lesions, Barretts (pre cancerous, like me), ulcers, etc. The doc will or should give you a prescription for Nexium so your insurance pays but there is really no need to wait to start the Prilosec. I have been taking Nexium for several years and before that Prilosec. Basically nonstop for at least 4 years.
Thank me later, get on the Prilosec today, right now, just go down to the drug store or grocery (or even better Costco/Sams), and get to it. Every hour you waste is another lost op to fix the problem, every day you wait is another shitty nights sleep and more damage to your esophagus +++.
Good luck.
