Depends on the current split that I am using... how much grip work is being employed by basic compound movements and how much I am using straps to hold bars... if pulling heavy weights is more important than indirect forearm work at the time - then I have to switch to some direct training for them...

The biggest personel desciding factor will be how porportionate your forearms are to your upper arms. Like calves, this can vary greatly depending on genetics. If your forearms are making your arm, as a whole, look like a big turkey leg - then it is time for some direct forearm training.
