I fvckin hate public speaking, but I have a class this quarter thats all about it. I'm not shy at all, but for some reason I get nervous and the heart rate picks up. You guys have any suggestions?

It sounds cliched, but imagine everyone in the underwear. The point of that exercise is to put the people who you are so afraid of (mainly because they are "judging you") into a position of silliness.
I try to picture all of the people Im speaking to taking the nastiest dump imaginable. it is very relieving and actually causes me to have to stifle laughter, but it works.
Point is, put all of them into a position of humor and it will relax your anxiety.
Damn, just reading the start of the thread made my hands instantly start to sweatI can't do it either, but I can train a group of people no problem.
Im terrified of public speaking..I shake..ppl laugh when im holding paper cuz it shakes all over the place
One time I stuttered and my friend goes "T..t..today junior"
and I was like stfu really loud so I failed![]()
Ghey!
i failed over half of my public speaking assignments at school for the simple fact im nervous and scared as a presenter...
I hate public speaking too man, its all about controlling your breathing. because you get nervous and you start to get short of breath because your heart rate is up. This causes us to stutter or hold our breaths which makes us more nervous. So if you can takes breaths after sentences, just by slowing down and breathing regularly you take away all fear.
C'mon ya'll, 99% of the time the crowd is sympathetic and attentive because they know what you are going through, just speak to the crowd as if it was one person.
I was a trainer for a year and daily I had to "teach" groups of adults about the company and procedures. Just picture the crowd on your side, and practice in a mirror a lot.
Public speaking is one of the most terrifying things for anyone to do ..... even for people who do it a lot. I find that if I write my speech out in quite large letters and practice until I know most of it by heart then I feel confident enough to get through with out too many hiccups. If I lost my written speech I would be fcuked!
Glad to hear you all feel my pain! I swear I'm not shy at all, but for some reason I suck at this shit. What makes it worse is that a lot of the time (today for example), I have no time for preparation. I don't know, maybe a few shots of jack? jk
u can do what they did in married with children
when ur up on stage or whatever picture everyone naked
and u will be fine lol
I hated public speaking as well but I confronted and challenged myself. Now I have no issues with public speaking. Over time I learned that be well prepared and NOT memorizing my presentation suited me best.
i hate going infront of the class to speak i get realy nervous and stuter
i got a script for xanax...i know most people dont wanna resort to this but i take it 1.5 hours before something important and im fine...
EVERYONE gets nervous for the first little bit... normally they calm down after the first minute!!! just relax, breath... and pretend to look different people in the eye.. know your material very well... you'll be fine!!
life changing and the skill will be with you for the rest of your life..

my head shakes, my face twitches and my heart races so fast i can barely mutter the words out. a lot of times its more physiological than psychological, but what worked (or 'working') for me is desensitizing myself to the physiological responses by repeared exposure in comforting environment, like toastmasters. this is something i also have to conquer before january.
I'm not nervous in soical environments, or to approach chicks/new people/ect - thats what makes it more frustrating. I'm even comfortable talking in a group, but when my ass gets up in front of the class, my heart rate and probably blood pressure sky rocket. Btw, whats the number one fear?
dude, i used to be exactly the same.
Now I have NO PROBLEM talking infront of very large groups (200+people).
I work at an amusement park so therefore I have to deal with a lot of people I don't know. Just try talking to random people. Milkmen, pizza boys, hairdressers, old people, young people, fat people and fit people. Talk to everyone so talking becomes second nature to you. Embarress yourself, say stuipd things, stutter and keep doing it over and over and eventually you will realise that standing up and talking, isn't that hard of a thing.
Just keep practicing and practicing so you get to the point where you don't care if people laugh at you for making a mistake or stuttering. The sooner you become confident in yourself and your abilities, the easier it is.
That worked for me anyway. Hope I was of some help.

I proably won't have to do it for a few weeks (hopefully), but I'll use your tips and update you guys. Until then, looks like I'm approaching random fat bitches. jk
Guys I used to be so terrified of public speaking I would have rather died than had to do it. Now I do it as a major part of my job. Biggest crowd is 1400 people so far and I look forward to it. The challenge is to do it and keep doing it, you will get more confidence. A majot turning point for me was doing a course and watching myself on video. What I was feeling inside and what I saw of me were two totally different things. The only thing that makes this easier is doing it a lot,
spiders and snakes, and i could really care less about them which is the funny part.Originally Posted by DNoMac
yup, totally correct. good to start in a comfortable environment and work your way up. but serious with 1400 people id shoot myself..Originally Posted by Kale
was that course required my school btw?
because i notice its a lot easier when you voluntarly choose to do it like with toastmasters. just the fact that i HAVE to do it is what bugs me, but for some reason if i volunteer the pressures cut in half.
I dislike public speaking as well. My mouth gets dry and my heart races. My brain thinks faster than I can spit words out. After the 2-3rd speech, I started cooling down a bit.
Ive found that when I have a fear of something that throwing myself into it repeatedly makes it easier over time but it sucks to go through that process.
I have a fear of tossing salads....and carnies.

I agree, and I've thought about doing this, I just can't figure out a situation where this would work without looking crazy (i.e. a bank "everybody can I have your attention").Originally Posted by roidattack

No, in your situation that means sigining up for public speaking seminars one after another. You might fumble fvck your way through some but you will get better and more relaxed as time goes on.
bring a machine gun and kill the crowd before your speechOriginally Posted by DNoMac

Should have known a thread on public speaking would get turned into tossing salad. Only on AR![]()
The 1400 people was a fund raiser for the Childrens Cancer Institute in Australia. I had to talk about my daughters life and death with cancer.Originally Posted by Bojangles69
I feel yah man. Its weird for me, I'm always speaking in class, I raise my hand and talk consistantly in class, and if the teacher told me go up front and tell a story and dance, I'd be fine. But if its a planned speech that i know im gonna be doing for a few days, the tension builds up to nervousness
Yea, I think I can relate to that. I'm cool in front or around people, but when it comes to a formal speech....Fvck that
Ive tried the xanax thing to. Problem is I get too loose lipped when I take that. I called someone an ass kisser in front of the chairman of the state tax commissionNot one of my better moments.
well shit, i guess it works thenOriginally Posted by roidattack
