43 French Bag Handlers Denied Clearance("linked to terrorism")

    ABC News
43 French Bag Handlers Denied Clearance

PARIS Oct 21, 2006 (AP)— Authorities rescinded the security clearance of 43 baggage handlers at France's main international airport due to suspicions they were connected with radical organizations, a top government minister said Saturday.

Responding to reports a day earlier that several dozen baggage handlers at Charles de Gaulle airport had lost security clearance, Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy put the number at 43 and said authorities had clear reasons to deny them security badges.

"There were specific elements that made us forbid them entry" to sensitive areas at Paris' largest airport, Sarkozy said.

"I cannot accept that people with radical practices" work in an airport, the minister said, adding that it was his "duty to ensure that (workers) do not have any kind of links with radical organizations."

Sarkozy did not elaborate on what specific information authorities had received about the workers denied security badges but at least some are known to be Muslims.

Addressing the airport crackdown at a day of debates at the Sorbonne University, Sarkozy said that, in addition to denying security badges to some baggage handlers, officials had also closed "seven Islamist, clandestine and illegal prayer rooms" at Charles de Gaulle and at Orly, the second Paris airport.

Sarkozy also said 18 imams preaching a radical brand of Islam had been expelled from France since January. It was the first official figure on the number of expulsions of imams suspected of passing a radical message to the faithful.

Lawyers have said the baggage handlers, who worked for subcontractors at the airport, were likely to lose their jobs because such work depends on security clearances. Four of them filed a joint complaint in the past week, alleging they had been unfairly associated with terrorism because they are Muslims, attorney Eric Moutet said Friday.

The anti-racism group known as MRAP announced Saturday that it, too, was filing a complaint on behalf of the baggage handlers for "discrimination because of ethnic origins."

Jacques Lebrot, an official who oversees Charles de Gaulle airport, told The Associated Press on Friday the cases were "linked to terrorism" and that the decision to deny clearance followed recommendations by France's anti-terrorism coordination unit, UCLAT, as part of an 18-month investigation.

Well, security first. No sense in taking any risk

What a bunch of BS. There is no "proof" these 43 are terrorists!! Its all about racism and keeping the Arab man down. Religious and race discrimination...the UN should take the matter before the Human Rights Commission. I mean look at Iran and Syria....there is no "proof" they support terrorism, so get off their backs. As a matter of fact, those 43 innocent workers should file a law suit in the International Court against George Bush...I'm sure he or Cheney had a hand in their security badges being pulled. This paranoia of Islam and anyone Arab has got to stop....its not "fair".

    Man, Teabagger. You are outrageous!

Better safe than sorry, I say. If I attended a radical Islamic sermon or was linked to radical Islamicists how could I actually expect to work in a post-9/11 airport? I know the French don't have a good relationship with their Arab population but in this case it seems entirely justified.

Of course, it could just be a plot to keep from having to hire Arabs... Who knows?

Thats a loaded statement, and a difficult situation to handle.
On ont side you have the criminal, extremist element to deal with, which is a real, and present danger to every corner of the planet.
On the other hand you have the majority of Arab\Muslim people who are good law abiding folks.

How do you distinguish, how does a country go about protecting its citizens?

IMO: profiling is a needed evil. The growing popularity of Islamic extremism, and violence has given birth to an unpopular, but very necessary method of policing the population.

I am on a plane every two weeks, and if it keeps me and those I love safe, I will submit to whatever security checks and restrictions it takes. I dont see this as an Infringement on my freedoms in any form.
Claiming that it is a conspiracy against Islam is a tool used by those with something to hide. If Jews or Blacks were blowing shit up around the world, then I would expect a metal detector up my ass every time I fly.

Just playing devils advocat here. But by the same logic only those with something to hide would be opposed to wire taps beeing legal without court order or police beeing able to search houses without a search warrant.

Slippery slope, allow one thing and the rest just comes so easily.
