Sterility in drawing gear out

Is it safe and sterile to dedicate one needle to a 10ml vial, leaving it poked through the rubber stopper for the next use? I'd like to draw it into the syringe with that pin then install a fresh one for the injection but not if the "open" passageway down a 23g pin will contaminate the rest of the product.

i personally wouldnt do that. why do you want to do that, pins are very cheap. just draw with one, discard it and inject with another

Actually, I once asked this question to an R.N. who worked in Quality Assurance at a major hospital.

His response is still fresh in my memory:

NO! YOU CANNOT LEAVE A NEEDLE IN A STOPPERED VIAL AND EXPECT THE CONTENTS OF THE VIAL TO STAY STERILE!



New pins are cheap. You can buy them on-line from pharmacy whole-salers. Best investment you'll ever make in your continued good health.

Just trying to be efficient not necessarily cost effective. Got plenty of pins, will just go that route.

That would not be the smart way to go aboutit. once the needle is in the vial, and you remove the syringe, there is an airway in the needle which could cause contaminations.

Yeah I agree, I work in a univeristy lab and let me tell you, bacteria can AND WILL get through anything unless its sealed.

Roger on all. The "open passageway" I mentioned in the original post was exactly why I was asking. Seemed like a stupid question but figured I'd ask anyway. Thanks for the responses.
