Well here you go:
RUGAROU! A WOLF BY ANY OTHER NAME TO LOUISIANA’S NATIVE AMERICANS
The heritage of Louisiana’s Native American peoples is rich with tall tales and legends and among the Native Americans of Southwest Louisiana the tale of the werewolf looms large.
Here the history of the Loup garou comes hand in hand with the legendary “skinwalkers,” the shapeshifters of the Native American tribes. Like werewolves or European lycanthropes, Indian skinwalkers were feared for their ability to assume not only the shape but also the nature of many aggressive animals and there is a strong tradition that the more the skinwalker “shifted” into his animal form, the more ferocious and wild each transformation could become.
But the skinwalker of the Native Americans is also rightfully feared for his ability to control the so-called “animal body of transformation” in such a way that although much of the power and perceptions of the animal of choice are retained, they are under the masterful direction of a fully cognizant host – the skinwalker himself. This is perhaps nowhere more evident than among the Indian peoples of Southwest Louisiana.
Where parish boundaries now exist were once the mutable limits of tribal nations such as the Opelousas, the Chitimacha, and the Attakapas; and there exists in the oral tradition of all these tribes a memory – primordial perhaps – of vicious and powerful shapeshifters who held sway over large areas of native lands, using their powers to instill fear among their own people and to manipulate or control their rivals.
The Attakapas, in particular, were the source of much fear and loathing among their own peoples and were shunned for their reputation as a nation that cannibalized its enemies. Many Louisiana Indian legends have been passed down that hint at something even more sinister at work among the Attakapas. Many believe this dark secret to be evidence of a skinwalking tradition that, if true, would mark the Attakapas as unique in the annals of lycanthropy: an entire tribe of werewolves.
