cd/dvd drive wont recognise blank discs

hey guys ive got a toshiba satellite laptop, ive had it for just over a year and it has developed a problem with the cd/dvd drive.
it will read and play any disc fine but it will not recognise any type or brand of blank disc at all, so i cant burn anything to cd/dvd.
i have tried different programs and troubleshooting guides but i cant find anything relating to my problem.
if anyone can help me out on this one it would be greatly appreciated.

so it worked and now it doesn't? If you use the same media that worked before and it doesn't now then it just means your drive is going out. Reading and writing are 2 entirely different processes for burners. Check to see if there is a warrenty on your laptop hardware (alot of times there are). if not, dvd/cd drive for laptops cost around 300.

thanks for the help man, yeah my laptop still has a waranty on it but i have to send it away to get fixed which means i would be without it for at least a week or 2 i was just hoping there might be a quick way around it...

i guess i will have to make that call to the toshiba repair center

when i bought it they gave me a 3 year extended waranty

your good mang...he was speculating. Sides, if you replace it yourself you might void your warrenty.

i was just reading the waranty booklet and they pretty much said everything is covered as long as it's not physically damaged or faulty because of a certain software you have loaded on or whatnot...
i will give them a call tomorrow if it needs a whole new drive i'm going to see if i can pay the difference to get a better one fitted instead of the standard shitty Matshita!
