Progress reports as one poster stated.
And also a backlog to compare what worked when you hit a wall.
Like for me my body changes with each contest prep.. It's good to have a window into last year or the year prior to know where to start.. and what should change.
Also when i hit a wall i can go back to something that worked previously and reincorporate it without having to 'feel tru'.

I write everything... How what i did felt. Modifications i made to diet; hand position; rep ranges.. justification for switches [in case i look back 1 year later and wonder why i chose a specific route.. so i can justify re-adding such to my routine]
