Punch as hard as a rock

I've recently pissed some people off. Just got in a fight tonight at a bar and even though I beat the guys ass it took a while. I want to learn how to punch as hard as a rock. What can I do (lifting wise) to punch harder? I know most is from your back so getting a stronger back would help

maybe take some boxing lessons i dont think any normal workout will specifically increase your punching "hardness." being overall stronger will of course make you punch harder

the technique to punching is actually learning to punch with the hip.

you rotate the hip as you punch. this sounds much easier than it actually is to perform. i was a ninjitsu competitor and learned much about fighting. wether boxing or martial arts, the technique for a strong punch is the same. u use your body weight and when you punch, the whole body weight is behind your fist. not just the arm and shoulder.

the biggest thing is learning to punch with a fluid motion of the whole body.. hips, legs, shoulder and even how u turn your wrist..

if you are asking for an actual workout, muscle and fitness once did an article saying incline bench was the best for a powerful punch....

but like everybody has said, strength is nothing without a fuild motion of the whole body when it comes to punching

I wouldn't be too concerned if you "beat the guys ass" you obviously did something right, and if you are anticipating going and getting into fights everyday then you will be the typical "meathead" that gives all us normal steroid users a bad name. If it comes down to it, defend yourself and beat some ass, but don't go out looking for fights...

purchase a firearm or stay out of fights. speed equals power. work the heavybag if you can. the more punches you throw in practice the faster and harder they'll fly when you need them. technique is a great thing to learn but the reality is in a street fight most of that goes out the window unless you really know what you're doing.

yeah when you punch you want to use your bodys movemt to go along with your fist so when you hit its just not the hitting power from your arm its your arm and all your body hitting along with it plus its weight and energy

thing of it like kinda getting hit by a car door v.s. getting hit by a moving cars door...lol what would hurt more?? haha sorry its the only thing i can think of to compare it to.....

bruce lee always taught to hit with the body and channel your movements as if you were going through the person not just hitting them and stopping.....try it some time it actually works....

    lol good luck

No, not trying to do that. Would like to build my chest and shoulders a little bit better and also in case I run into something like that again and im with a lady. I don't want to be the one getting there ass kicked

here, here is some advice that will help you.

punching power does not come from that back. the backs purpose is to pull.
work on pushing movements. shoulder press, bench press. A lot of your power comes from your shoulders. Front delt raises will help a lot. Obviously technique is going to help. But thats not even most important. For instance you can hit someone as hard as you want with as much speed as you want with a pillow but it will only hurt so much. pain comes from density. this is the reason a 1 inch wide lead baton hurts twice as bad as a 3 inch wide wooden bat. so to do this, condition your knuckles, wrist, and forearm. i do this by simply finding something hard like smooth cemement and just punch it. start light cause it will hurt. do it everyday. over time your bones will adapt to the stress and become more dense. its called Wolffs Law. hope that helps.

you know one thing nobody has talked about...

half of hitting hard is hitting in the right spot.....

learning weak spots, and learning natural knock out points are better than anything

I dunno about the rest of you, but every bar fight i'v ever been in, and almost all the ones I'v witnessed have never been 1 on 1. and have never been just fists for that matter. My best advise is learn how to swing a bar stool!!!!!!!!

lifting WILL help you. Aside from normal lifts like bench, shoulder press, curls, and tricep extensions - you could do more specific exercises like grap a handle and attach it to the universal rack and move the latch up to about arm level. While grabbing the handle make a fist and start punching slowly with proper form - with resistance on it will make your punches more powerful

for those of you who said speed is what makes a punch effective you are correct to a point - imagine being hit by a mini cooper @ 50mph versus being hit by a Semi @ 50mph - BIG difference.

I agree... also having strong shoulders and chest will help you hold your bodyweight behind your fist at the point of impact, andof course strength is not enough on its own so def take some boxing/mma classes.

Lifting weights does make a difference, when i was competing in TKD younger i added weights cause i was the smallest of the heavyweights, i was 183 pounds and most of the heavyweights where 220, slow but when they cought me with a kick it hurt.

By doing a lot of leg training i got the power i needed even at a low bodyweight of 183 to actually stand my ground with the big boys.

Bench press, incline press, leg press, military press, squats (check your forms) dips, chin ups will all help you with your goal.

And of course proper punching techics.

I got the bas rutten cds very good workout and instructional.

just did a round with the bag, its amazing how hard it is to punch from your hip everytime especially when your throwing fists like no other. Also I want someone that has been in boxing or some sort to cretic my workout. I started off by running at 4.5 mph on the treadmill throwing like punches when i ran, i then immediately would go to the bag and have a 5 minute round or so with that, then I proceeded to do wrist curls and then those "squeezy things" that you do/hold in your hands then I did 50 sit ups. then repeat, Now im not a huge guy and I really only joined this forum for workout tips so take that into consideration when your reading about my bitch ass workout. I did this 3 times because I was a little tired but if I could have tips to make my training more intense and get better and fighting so I can defend myself properly.

p.s. i didnt lift any because i did back yesterday

    How about stop fighting????

Before someone teaches you a lesson of your own.

My Father set me straight in the garage when i was a kid. One day I was shooting my mouth off about how I was going to kick this guy's ass and that guy's ass from my Junior High. The next thing I know I'm planted up against the wall with the old man all over me.

The lesson: There will always be someone tougher or crazier than you.

Now I'm proud to say I'm a lover and not a fighter.

P.S. I have a CCW for preventitive maintenance... An armed society is a polite society.

if you get in a fight, someone better go to the hospital, otherwise, it isn't worth fighting about.. i agree with these statements..

sure there are crazier people than me, but that isnt an asset in a fight, especially with me.

Dont waste your time... find a boxing club, there is a lot more too it than hitting a bag, trust me on this you wont be sorry.
