What are your opinions on hitting the heavy bag for cardio and weight loss? Is it more effective than running?

I hit the bag every other day and have for the better part of my life. There has been times where I strayed from that routine..and upon my return is when I am reminded of what great cardio the bag provides. Getan egg timer, set it for 3 minutes and hit the bag with a one minute rest in between.
It's easy to stay within your FB range by the adjusting the quality and quantity of your punches. Plus, it's a real good workout for the delts and you may need to use some of what you practice if faced with confrontation.
It's the same reason I play b'ball or tennis as opposed to merely running. Kinda' killing two birds with one stone. Me thinks.
I love the it, nothing builds a strogner punch than hitting teh heavy bag.
More harsh on your shoulder/elbow/wrists but def a cardio workout.
it's not as effective for pure cardio and fat loss as running, but it's more fun and translates better into the real world. if you're trying to lose alot of fat nothing beat long runs or speedwalking though.
Had the bas rutten mix martial arts training cds and your ready to go 7 rounds of boxing, muay thai and mma training.
It is as good as running and 10x more fun
it would be hard to keep your HR in the right zone hitting heavy bag unless you are doing a "boxercise" kind of workout on it.

plenty of times i can remember that i had to stop because i couldnt breathe, 7/8 rounds is tough. try throwing at least 100 punches per round, makes it a little interestignOriginally Posted by perfectbeast2001
I do 8 - 5 minute rounds with a 30 second break in between. Do that 3 - 5 times a week. Make sure you equally use both hands and know proper punching techniques or you run the risk of breaking something.
