    Tuna = too much mercury???

I eat 2 cans of tuna everyday at lunch. Been doing it for about a month. Someone told me I was gonna get mercury poision. Is there really any truth to this, or is it one of those media scares?

i think there may be some (and i use that term loosely) truth to it...but ive been eating at least a can of tuna/day for over a year and im still alive and kicking!

But you look a little green in your avatar upstate.. Careful JNC. hehe I would change it up a little JNC. I dont know how easy it is to get mercury poison, but it is true Tuna has a lot of mercury in it and too much mercury is not good for you. There are other things you can eat.

Eat your two cans of Tuna and tell them to go drink a glass of shut the **** up.

Goddamn people piss me off, it is usually the fat ass that say's "Tuna? You will get mercury poison" all while eating their double cheeseburger and fries and of course the Diet Coke.

You would have to eat a shit load of Tuna to get mercury poison and two cans a day is not gonna do it.

The only thing that worries me about mercury is that it can never leave your body so it just builds up and builds up in your cells/tissues. Over time in the long run when you are old you may be sluring your speech, walking with a stagger. But oh well at least you'll be ripped hahaha

Dont worry about it at all. In canned tuna they use baby tuna not adult. The mercury content is much lower in the younger tuna and its not gonna do shit to you. Eat 20 cans a day and it wont een do anything.

I have read that some people are subseptible to mercury poison and others are not. The example the site I read it on used was that everyone that has mercury fillings do not get sick even though they all leak mercury into your body.

To clear things up. For anyone who has had a child, your woman's doctor warns about eating tuna while pregnant because of the mercury causing defects to unborn baby during their development in the womb.

Other than that, healthy adults (who are not pregnant) should have no problems with the mercury levels in tuna.

I dont believe that. I been eating 2-6 cans a day for a year. when i cut i have 2 cans 3x a day and 12oz chicken 3 times a day. anyway the truth bout the mercury is neither here nor there. also if you work out you expell more mercury than normal. so eat up...

bullshit. there are several things that can aid in mercury detoxification. NAC and ALA being a few. Its called Chelation Therapy.

The human brain cannot get rid of Mercury or other heavy metals. Hence the slur and stagger.

I think my uncle has mercury poisoning. He is always staggering around slurring his words....haha

the human body it self cant do it. but there are ways, some of which are of questionable safety and efficacy, but it can be done. of course mercury poisoning is a real thing. But its not like oh, mercury is in me, might as well kill myself.

btw its not just mercury. there are other heavy metals as well, arsenic, chromium, lead, among others.

    again look up chelation therapy.

Like someone else here said, it appears to be only a problem when you are consuming mass quantities of the larger tuna. The albacore tuna, that premium white that is real expensive, has much more mercury than your regular can of tuna. I know guys who have been eating 2 cans or more of tuna for 20 yrs or more and no problems. Its all blown out of proportion. If i think back, ive been eating tuna regularly now for about 17 years. Average about 2 cans a day.

I got tested for mercury poisoning back when I was eating 3 cans of albacore a day (i got a huge quanitity of tuna from a buddy of mine, I thinK I still have a case of it somewhere). I was having a hard time concentrating on difficult tasks, and breaking out for no apparent reason. The test came back indicating elevated mercury levels but not high enough to be toxic. I guess the point is that you can over do it, but if you stick to the regular tuna and don't abuse it you should be fine. I currently only have tuna about twice a week (which is the FDA reccomended limit), and some salmon every so often. I've come to rely more on chicken, turkey, and steak for my protein needs. The problem with mercury is that it accumulates over time (like all heavy metals). I'm not trying to scare anyone, just shedding some light on the topic.

Ive read that that albacore has many more times the concentration of regular tuna. Was there anyway that they could treat you when you had those symptoms, or just wait for it to pass?

The level of mercury in me wasn't high enough to warrant cheloid treatment, but that's what's used if you must be treated for toxicity. The doc just reccomended I keep taking niacin, drink a lot of water and stay away from the albacore.

    Lightbulb NAC supplementation

If you're worried about mercury read up on N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) supplementation. You can get it at any supplement store. Try googling Mercury and glutathione, and mercury and NAC. It seems to have some merit.

your best bet is canned, light tuna, which has low levels....albacore and the other tunas have about double, but is still considered moderate....

avoid swordfish, mackerel, and shark as they have very high levels...grouper, orange roughy (very common fish), and sea bass have moderate levels....

tilapia, shrimp, salmon, scallops, trout, and catfish have low levels
