Customs investigators seized a large quantity of human growth hormones in a raid on a home in Melbourne's north-west.
The Australian Custom Service investigation began on February 1 when officers intercepted a parcel from China at the Melbourne Gateway Facility, a Customs spokesman said.
The parcel allegedly contained a small quantity of phials containing a white powder along with labels marked "human growth hormone", the spokesman said.
Customs investigators raided a house in Taylors Lakes on Wednesday and uncovered 165 phials allegedly containing anabolic steroids, he said.
Human growth hormones, used to improve sporting performance or to assist in bodybuilding, cannot be imported into Australia without a permit from the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The maximum penalty for illegally importing human growth hormones is a fine up to $110,000 and/or five years' jail.
No charges have been laid but investigations are continuing, the spokesman said.
