my boy has one...the same kind in turner and hooch...they are amazing dogs..his is gigantic...and honestly one of the best dogs for protection of children...my friend has a 5 year old sister and a 1.5 year old brother the dog has been around a long time and is very protective and playful with them..naturally u might be intimidated by the size with the kids but my freinds dog is extremely careful and well tempered...

Good breed and good temperement. I personally prefere the bull mastiff but the mastiff is a great dog.

I had one years ago. Great dog. But keep in mind they'll want lots of room to run around.

For a smaller area, like a back yard, I'd go for something like a terrier or a bulldog. Maybe a beagle.

Best thing to do is check with a good breeder, ask their opinion on the suitability of the breed to your situation and your family. One thing a good breeder will do, is they will take the dog back if things come up and you can't keep it. Of course, you probably won't get your $$$ back, but if you're gonna pay good $$$, you absolutely want to buy from a breeder who looks after the best interests of their dogs.

I own one. The turner and hooch dog is a douge de bordeaux, not a bull mastiff. All though they have similar blood lines. The bordeaux is called a french mastiff in AKC terms.

Bullys are great with children. Great dogs period. Mine is going on 4 ths year. Best dog I have ever owned. They need some excercise daily, but in the house their really aloof. Their know for being gentle giants.

They reall dont require a lot of room. They can be kept in apartments as long as they get daily excercise.

Allmostgone has some mastiffs if you want to know more about that breed.

I have some pics on the board of my dog if you search for them.

I worked with animals at a clinic / breeder for years. They have GREAT temperament. Very patient and don't mind kids beating up on them like infants have a habbit of doing. just introduce him slowly and make sure you let the dog associate the child with you.

p.s. the dog will herd the kid

300 lbs may be on a Mastiff, but Bullmastiff males would be hard pressed to be pushing the 200's. If this is true I would like to see these reports, and how the AKC would accept these new weights considering the breed standards.

Because of the mix of english bulldog in them, then retain a shorter stature then the mastiff and have a stout frame much like the French Mastiff.
