    Upgrade time... Vista?

I cuurently have an Athlon64 3700+ 2.2Ghz on an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe with an Asus 6800GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-E video card. A 10,000 RPM/8MB buffer Western Digital Hard Drive for the operating system - and a Western Digital Caviar 7,200 RPM/16MB buffer for storage. Using a gig of OCZ Dual Channel Platimun 3200 Low Latency RAM.

This bad boy is about to turn two years old this summer. I was thinking about keeping it as-is (same 939 mobo) but switching out with the following:

    AMD Athlon 64 (939) FX-60 2x1MB Toledo

    ASUS GeForce 7950GT 512MB GDDR3

Probably going to need more memory for Vista? Does anyone know if Adobe CS2 runs well on Vista?

dude dont even bother putting a new processor in and a video card, just wait a little bit and get a whole new computer. I have an AMD system but not intels are faster at the same clock rate. Just install vista on it, btw it aint that great, nothing too special about it, and some of your programs may not work, actually a lot of them, not sure about cs2.

Vista needs a bit more work. It's just like anything else, takes a few months after retail release for all the bugs to be discovered/worked out.

What's in the horizon? I haven't researched much since I built this system... and when I bench marked it in Sandra, it was running circles around Intel chips at the same clock speed. Maybe I'll just drop another gig of that OCZ ram in and then install Vista in about a month or so - any word on upcoming service packs?

Maybe instead of a new GPU; I'll move into SLI. Whats a good place to buy another Asus 6800GT 256MB DDR3? NewEgg doesn't seem to carry them anymore and apparently MonarchComputer is offline and bankrupt (RIP). I use two DVI outputs - one goes to an LG Widescreen monitor (for work and Internet use) and the other runs to an LG widescreen LCD TV (for movies and what not)...

I will simply patch this one up a bit and then build another system this summer if the technonolgy is about to make things real interesting over the next few months...

Only install Vista if you have a burning need for IPv6.

vista? oh no..not another one....Dont buy into any hype. Vista is a waste, not worth it yet, dont waste money on upgrading for it. Just wait it out. You dont need it.

I'm probably gonna stick with XP forever, Vista is such crap I don't even know why they wasted there time making it, they should have just worked more on XP .

I am a Microsoft beta tester and I'll tell you what, with the release of SP1 every problem that I had with Vista was fixed. It's faster than XP, more secure, has better memory management, ZERO crashes (unless they are third party driver related) and much more.

I think the SP1 update will be released to the general public shortly. Once that comes out there is absolutely no reason NOT to upgrade.

Vista is Crap. It always locks up between programs. When I run internet explorer and I switch between screens it locks up. I can't run anywhere near the amount of open programs that I could run on XP. Even with 2GB of ram.

I think your computer is just crap.

No, really. I run Vista 100% of the time and I'm a web developer. My computer has to work all the time or I don't get paid. It is stable, there is just something wrong with your computer. It's probably something to do with your drivers.

Then it's dell crap, that they sell. What do you think the issue is? I try to stay updated on the latest drivers too. Maybe you could make a suggestion?
I'm not on that computer right now, so I can't try anything.. It's Frustrating too, because dell has no answers either.

Let me know if this is normal: When I run a full virus scan from Norton, and I try to use internet explorer, the computer slows down significantly, and stalls between windows.

vista just over all sucks. everything including surfing the internet is slower. i cant even open a program without it asking permission. i want an operating system and not a babysitter. hell i cant even install half of my hacked and cracked programs/software on vista either. i would rather have a mac or another operating system that isnt over paranoid about everything i try to run or install. now maybe the upgrades (sp) will fix alot of this, but even so, i am so turned off by it at present that even with its sp it can still kiss my ass as far as i am concerned. xp>vista. oh yeah, fu bill gates.

Usually Dell is pretty good about these things. It's possible that you actually have defective hardware in your computer. Windows Vista is much harder on your hardware which means any small problems with your memory (for instance) will show up faster than on Windows XP.

No, your computer slows down during a virus scan but with a dual core CPU you really shouldn't even be able to tell it's running... at least when trying to use Windows. My vote goes for defective hardware.

The good news is SP1 is right around the corner. It fixed my problem. I thought I had faulty RAM. I had to run it at 180mhz instead of the 200mhz it's rated at. After I installed SP1 I could run it at the full 200mhz without a problem. Crazy stuff!

The only problem many people are having with performance is due to crappy display driver support. This could be your problem as well. Network access has been sped up. SP1 fixes the display driver problem.

This is a security feature due to UAC. UAC can be disabled. I've had it off since I installed the OS. No problems for me! :-)

Honestly, Bill Gates is a business genius. He is one of the reasons PCs have progressed to the level they have. Also, his operating system supports an extremely large amount of hardware. I don't think any other operating system in the world has to support the amount of hardware that Windows does. **** a Mac. I use Macs every day and if you even have 1 damaged font installed it can crash your software. It happens to me on a daily basis since I work in an advertising agency/publishing house and we have to have a large amount of fonts installed.

So what kind of defective hardware would that symptom be from? Ram, Processor, motherboard, videocard, backup hard drive? I just don't know what to do with it. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. I used to have a friend that was my guru on computer problems, but he died a few years ago. I sure do miss him and his advice.

Sorry to hear about your friend, man. That sucks...

Anway, I would think it is a RAM or graphic card problem BUT before you try to get it replaced wait for SP1. You can actually download SP1 now... just type "vista sp1 download" into Google and you should be able to find it. It might help!

Good luck, man. Seriously. I hate it when my computer doesn't want to work properly...

I'll give it the benefit of doubt, but if SP1 does not fix anything, I'm going to be pissed off.

I got a brand new Sony Viao this past summer with Vista pre-loaded. I HATE this OS. Good thing I have XP on my desktop! If I had the money I'd go Mac!

Vista is shit. I upped to SP1 and so what it fixes few things but Vista just takes up too many resources. I still use it though but I am running everything... XP, Vista, Ubuntu, SUSE etc....

At the end of the day everyone will go Vista because M$ rules the freakin world and they are the king of intergration. I would stick with XP for now though....
