I've taken standard (not flush free) niacin for cholesterol help. I got the flushy, itchy skin but after a while I got used to that. I have read that the flush free stuff isn't nearly as effective as the normal version for assisting with cholesterol. I took mine with garlic pills and red yeast rice and had very good results, verified by lab work.

I get itchy too... It is a niacin overdose... but is not harmful and goes away shortly. I got red from the non-flush kind too...

Policosanol is touted as a natural way to treat high cholesterol levels. Published studies have come to conflicting conclusions regarding the efficacy of policosanol in lowering LDL (i.e., "bad cholesterol") or raising HDL (i.e., "good cholesterol").[1][2] Many of the studies that have found positive effects of policosanol have come from one group in Cuba,[citation needed] whose research has been funded by Dalmer Laboratories (aka Laboratorios Dalmer). This company was created by the National Center for Scientific Research in Havana, Cuba specifically to market policosanol. Cuba produces sugar cane, one of the sources of policosanol. A German study failed to find evidence of cholesterol-lowering effects. In this study, 143 participants with hypercholesterolemia or combined hyperlipidemia were randomly assigned to policosanol at doses of 10, 20, 40 or 80 milligrams daily or placebo. After 12 weeks, the researchers found no statistically or clinically significant effect on LDL-C, HDL-C, total cholesterol, triglycerides, or lipoproteins. In other words they found policosanol to be of no clinical value.[1]

Got this info from wikipedia...does anyone know of any more studies?

Looks like I'll stick with Niacin till I see some.

Good post, really shows how just about anything can be deemed worthless.

So, why then would I feel so strongly about recomending policosanol. Because I worked in a health food store and we recommended it to people all the time, after about two months people started buying more of it because it was lowering on avg 20 points or more......

Im not trying to make a buck, Im not trying to argue the validness of studies that show it dosent all im trying to do is help. Its really cheap, like 10.00 and we had/still have great success.

We even got to the point where local doctors who didnt try to take advantage of people by selling scripts would tell them to try it.

Do I have any studies, no, just real world experience,

Bottom line give it a try and if it dosent work big deal if it does well good you'll thank me latter.

Human studies have been increasing. In one recent study, patients with LDL-cholesterol greater than 160 mg/dl were randomized in double-blind fashion to receive policosanol (10 milligrams daily), lovastatin (20 milligrams daily) or simvastatin (10 milligrams daily). After eight weeks of therapy, LDL-cholesterol was reduced 24% in the policosanol groups, 22% in the lovastatin group and 15% with simvastatin. HDL-cholesterol increased significantly in the policosanol group but not in the other two groups. Policosanol was judged to be "a safe and effective cholesterol reducing agent."

In another recent double-blind study of policosanol's possible effects in hypercholesterolemia, patients received 5 milligrams of policosanol or placebo daily for 12 weeks followed by 10 milligrams of policosanol or placebo for a subsequent 12 weeks. Policosanol (5 and 10 milligrams daily) appeared to significantly reduce LDL-cholesterol (18.2% and 25.6% respectively) and reduce cholesterol (13% and 17.4%). It appeared to raise HDL-cholesterol (15.5% and 28.4%). Triglycerides were unchanged in the first 12-week period but were significantly reduced (5.2%) by the end of the second 12-week period. Side effects were few and minor. There were 11 serious (7 of these were vascular) adverse events among those taking policosanol.

Thanks for info. Hell looks like for 10 bucks its worth having a go with it. Thats the good thing on this board you can pick up alot of good info.

If it raises HDL by 15% it would be a good investment.
