    Lexapro and Alcohol

    Hey guys/girls

I recently starting taking Lexapro 25mg/ed for my anxiety. Ive been on it for about 3 weeks now. I havnt noticed any side effects yet, nor has it calmed my anxiety down....probably just havnt been on it long enough. I went out drinking last weekend and the weekend before that and i felt horrible. It was almost impossible for me to get drunk and felt like i drank a bottle of nyquil. I was just super drowsy. I dont drink very often but occasionally on the weekends i like to party a bit. Is this normal? I know it says right on the bottle dont drink alcohol with this medication. I didnt know it would have an effect like this though.

You answered your own question. Alcohol is a depressant, and you are taking anti-depressants, of course its going to mess with your head and body.

lex may take six weeks to kick in but you are acting foolish by adding alcohol into your life while dealing with your emanational problems.
This not judgmental as i was on lex and wellburtin for over two years. I just know what you must do if you really want to get better. i did you can to.

25mg is an unusual dose for Lex. I am Lexapro at the moment, more for depression than social anxiety. I have actually found that I am alot more socially confident now that I have been on it a few months. Personally I take mine at night because it makes me drowsy. I ahve beenon a few AD's before that. Ironically I quit Celexa because it made me very anxious.

Actually Im a pre-grad psychologist going for my doctorate and at this time of my life I would say first Lex for a lot of people will put you through a adjustment phase where your sertonin levels will drop (quite like test does with test but not so much because its *mimiking the receptor site action)

So Id stay away from alcohol as you need to have an accurate perception especially in the begining of whether or not the drug will suit you.

If it DOES. And after you've been on it for a few months and if its working and your not having suicidal sides than YES I would ok moderate drinking at that point. JM2C

And alcohol although classified a depressant as can have stimulant affects for some people after a couple of drinks. And can also have an anti-depressant affect (psychologically) when the initial euphoria kicks in. But at a certain point you just become drunk and will function depending on what kind of drunk you are.
I myself am a very happy loveable drunk, other people are angry homocidal maniacs.. so its all in context of your personality.

25mg is a fairly high dose to be starting at...

U shouldnt mix alcohol and prescription drugs.. its dumb, but maybe u are looking for something bad to happen and should see ur psy more often and deal with your underlying issues.

I really appreciate all the the replys guys. I made a typo im actually on 10mg/ed....oops. I'm not depressed at all, I just skitz out in the mornings sometimes and before i have important stuff to do. I kinda figured that was why it was causing drowsiness....i just didnt know it would be so extreme. Definitly going to stop drinking for a while.

Every perscription med says don't drink on alcohol. Is lexapro an ssri? i take zoloft have been for a few months. I drink all the time it is fine. They both use the liver so that is why they tell you not to drink on them It does seem to take me a lot more to get drunk tho.

I am an expert on alcohol, and lack of alcohol in your body could be the problem. When you drink you do not have anxiety ,and when you don't you do. My answer to (is it normal). No it is not millions of people do not drink and lead very great lives.
