Somebody please explain the ending of The ***arted for me

I realize I am way behind on my pop culture, but I finally watched The ***arted and it was pretty much the best movie I had ever seen until the end. Can anybody explain it to me as to why it ended the way it did, or is it simply left up to the viewer to come to thier own conclusion.

the name of the movie is the D eparted. meaning the dead. so everyone died. wahlberg took matters into his own hands and ended all of that shit. he's cool.

I got confused too, I came to the conclusion I was reading to much into it...

whalberg wasnt on nickelsons payroll or anything, just a cop with a grudge and settled it gangster style.

If you want a movie with a suprise fucing ending watch The Prestige, pretty good!

The ending is quite clear.

You think Matt Damon has quite literally gotten away with murder by being the biggest schmuck of the em all by eliminating all his enemies but then you forget all about Whalberg (classic movie misdirection).

He kills Damon, hence to give the film some kind of happy ending, or at least an ending with a sense of justice.

The rats you see at the end, a bit cheesy as they are, are a clear metaphore of what everyone in the film is.
