When to take knee pain serious?

i just recentley started having a problem in my right knee(within the last month), and this was due to what i think cardio (jogging outdoors on pavement), eversince i started i have had knee pains, anyway i just walked back from class less than 2 miles, and i had to take at least 8 breaks in this time frame (due to the pain in my knee), is my knee really f#cked up or am i just being over cautious? oh yea i am taking a tripleflex formula which has glucosamine and msm as well as other various herbs 2x a day(within the last 3 weeks), and i usually take 4 aleve liquid gels a day( before cardio, and lifting) thanks for any input.

Did u injure it initially ? or did this pain just start with yout increase in workout?
I always have weird knee pains and things feel wrong but everytime i go to the doctor they check it and say nothing is wrong and that i should only come back when there is swelling or bruising or serious problem when moving or walking with it.

I am the over-cautious type so i always prefer to exaggerate the condition that way i know inside i am not making it worse until i know exactly whats wrong.

After many visits over the years to the doctors they finally did an MRI just to shut me up and it turns out i just had problems with my kneecaps, almost 90% of athletes have a problem where the kneecap tracks inccorectly when moving especially when doing cardio, this could lead to inflamation and little wear in the cartilage which causes pain and mainly it causes many "trick" sensations which make u think something is really wrong when it isnt!

Go check with a doctor it could be something pattelae related, the only way to help with it if thats the case is to lessen the cardio a little and strengthen the VMO which is kindof on the inside of your thigh muscle where your kneecap connects to the quadracep, making this very strong corrects the imbalances in your kneecap and it moves better, then you can go back and do cardio again.

Personally i wrap my knees for jogging, squats, deadlifts and cycling. Stretch the piss out of your hams and quads for at least 1 minute each muscle twice a day. Skipping rope and free lunges seems to help the pain. Also lack of flexibility in the ankles or hips might cause the knee to over compensate so it might not be a bad idea to stretch the shit out of those and do a bunch of ankle rotations before your exercises. Ice your knees for at least 10 minutes after running, squating, deadlifts and cycling aswell. Any antinflamitory like your liquigel somthin or other caps will do good. Might not hurt to take a week or two off with only stretching and free lunges. And one last thing might be an imbalance of strength in your hams and quads. Alot of people dont do any compound lifts for hamstrings like deadlifts, straightleg deadlifts or goodmornings and think they are hitting the hams adequately with just squats, lunges and hamstring curls which is totally lop-sided. If you can manage to stick with the stuff i mention here and it is tendonitis it will go away no doubt.

Heres a couple links to help you determine if it is tendonitis or not

***ends on the reason for pain.

I'd stretch the hams & calves but not the quads personally. For knee support, I doubt your quads are too tight but over-tight hams/calves can cause a lot of knee pain.

See a sports doctor ASAP. A regular doctor will just tell you to stop training.

Why on earth would you say somthing like that????????????????? The quads are more important to stretch then any other muscle when dealing with tendonitis of the tendons that connect your quads to your tibia or fibia. go eat another spicy meatball

When it hurts! Lol. I used to run on pavement late nights. It was cool I miss that. I'd jog from my house down to the bay and I'd hear crickets and the nice cool salty breeze and this wonderful feeling of solitude. Very Zen. I miss it. Then I'd jog on the tread mill and I even had to stop that. Now it's strictly cross trainer. I don't waste my time with elliptical. Can't squat either. Damn knees! When I was younger one older bodybuilder told me that I go to heavy to often. He said he did the same and now his knees are pretty worn. Did I listen? Nah.

Years ago when I wasn't training I had the problem with my knee caps. I was in so much pain bending down or sitting in those chairs at the movies. Doc said to start doing light leg extensions until the quads strengthened. This in turn would help align my knee caps. Not sure if he was right but it worked. I just recently started having serious pain doing squats so I guess I'm stuck with leg presses.

i have been suffering with knee pain for about a year, these last few months its gotten really bad. turns out its due to severely knotted and tight quads. Im undergoing sports massage 2 x weekly for abit to get the knots out, and will be taking up alittle bit of yoga, plus a stretching routine of my own.

Dude, im about your age and had the same problem. Talked to a couple people (trainer, pharmacist, runners) and they told me to: run on a soft track or grass from now on if i'm going to run outdoors, take my running shoes into a good shoe place and show them the wear on the bottom and they will recommend a special type of shoe for me, and take some time off running for a few days or a week. In my opinion, its better to take a week off of cardio to recover from a little pain than to take a month or two off to recover from a whole lotta pain. At one point I had pain in my ankles, knee (went away and came back couple times a day) and my hip sometimes. Also if you have kinda flat feet or any other foot problems I would goto a foot specialist and they can mold you a show insert.
