I know it's a stupid question but I am obsessed with training and was just wondering can you still get big in the army beacuse you only get 3 meals a day and you are always running.

It makes it tough but you can alwasy buy food if you are not ***loyed somehwre and even then you can get your hands on stuff! Make friends in the chow hall
no not during boot camp.....you'll get ripped though......
once your out of boot camp and stationed at a unit then PT will be a lot easier.....
you may have a chance then to bulk up....
who told you that you only get 3 meals a day?? maybe in boot camp..Originally Posted by asvt
once you get in the duty, you can always take jerky, tuna whatever you want with you..
and at every base i was ever at, they always had one chowhall open 24/7

agree with this above.. also ***ends on MOS... if it was impossible to get big then everyone in the army would be skinny... which is far from true. Getting real big in some MOS' will make it harder for you too.Originally Posted by spywizard
one other thing you didn't say is how big are you and what do you consider big??... you could be a lean small person and if you are, it is guaranteed you will put on some size by just doing the normal routine and not really trying. Too many variables to predict. old diet before you go in, etc..
I'm currently 150lbs 11% BF 18YO and I would consider anything over 170lbs ripped big. My diet and routine is ok I seem to always go up in strength. I think the training in the army will be a great change for my body but my only concern is the diet I mean it's hard enough to eat the amount of food needed as it is but I would probably need even more because of all the cals burned when running.Originally Posted by rockinred
FCK YEAH, you can get huge in the army, you will have to deal with ***loyments and these CAN throw a huge wrench in your plans but there are tons of dudes overseas making progress.
when you come back and your stateside you've got two choices on how to spend your free time, getting drunk or become a fitness freak, I chose the latter and made some of my biggest gains while i was active duty. I also choose the prev and made some of the biggest gains in becomming the smallest ive ever been..
You do get three meals but you can still hit up the exchange and commisary and eat another 4 meals almost everyday.
Some of the Biggest guys ive ever seen in the gym were when I was active duty.
Dude, your 18, wait till your about 22-26 years old, your metabolizm will slow down a bit and the little running you do for pt each day will help more than hurt.
Basic and AIT are a diff side of the coin but that only lasts for like 4 months or so.......
what is your MOS going to be?????
I agree with MFT81, your choice will be A: become a fitness freak or B: become a lush like everyone else. I made some awesome gains when I was on active duty.
When I was in Korea I had a platoon sergeant who was a sociopath and seriously ran the shit out of us every chance he got. I was running probably 25 miles a week at like 7 minutes per mile and was so overtrained it was almost impossible to make consistent gains.
Getting d eployed to Iraq was actually where I made my biggest gains. Tons of chow available and actually top notch gyms- hammer strength, tons of free weights, the best stuff. Also, I never had to do PT with my platoon so any cardio I did was up to me. Finding time to eat while on missions was the biggest challenge, but I had my family send me protein bars by the case.
Good luck dude, hope you picked a cool MOS.
Also dont marry a stripper.
yeah that's a whole 'nother thread. I've got some stories on that subject.

I went in at 155 and i maintained about 165 throughtout... toward the end I got to about 170....Originally Posted by asvt
still think things like MOS/Unit, etc.. all facto in heavy.. I was 11B and always running and road marches.. in the field all the time.. I could never hit a peak in the gym because it would get interupted with different ***loyments/training.. so it starts with YOU first... how much are you going to dedicate... then it is MOS (how much time)... then it is unit (some don't train as often as others.... I was on ***loyment around 7 mos a year and on real missions there was no gyms set up... places like Panama and other established places all have that stuff set up for you...
I am assuming you are in the US... I don't know how Army life is for other countries..
What are those military packed meals called? MRE? meals ready to eat I think.
anyway, my friend is there. he eats those, and I believe is pack with 1200cals.
Yes they do have 1200 calories... But trust me eating those definately gets old after a while, and the meals themselves are so small your always hungry after you finish it off.Originally Posted by xlxBigSexyxlx
As for worrying about eating at basic//ait all I can say is shovel a bunch of food in your mouth, and then wash it down with some water. Get food that doesn't require much chewing ie; mashed potatoed, noodles, oatmeal, etc.
I am in the UK currently under process of joining the army I am doing my BARB (British Army Recruit Battery Test) and maths test friday. I was told it's going to take 3-4 months to get in, which really annoyed me I was hoping to be in, in a few weeks. Also what does MOS mean? And thanks for all the replies they have really put my mind at rest.

I feed one to my dog...He licked his a$$ 3 times to get the taste out of his mouth...I guess i'm lucky he didn't bite, and that I didn't get locked up for cruelty to animals
MRE's only 1200 calories?? I think thats wrong. Last I checked MRE's had like 3-4k calories. And I like their test.![]()
I had a hard time adding on alot of muscle in the army due to the fact that we ran 3-4 miles, 4 days a week at a minimum 7min mile pace, so I stayed pretty lean but kept a nice toned look though (and not taking in any supplements didnt help either)...So ***ending on how your unit's PT schedule is, you could add some mass but I had a harder time being that I was in a combat arms unit.
