Mohammed may top list of boys' names in the UK

Mohammed may top list of boys' names in the UK
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...6/nboys106.xml

Mohammed could soon become the most popular boy’s name in the country, as more and more Muslim parents choose to name their sons after the Islamic Prophet.

When all the different spellings of the name are added up, the name was second only to Jack in last year’s registration of boys’ births.

The name of the Prophet was given to 6,010 babies last year, compared to 6,928 children who were called Jack.

Officially the name did not appear in the list of top ten boys’ names published by the Office of National Statistics, because the total number of registrations is split into 16 different spelling variations.

But when added together the name has eclipsed Thomas, which now lies in third place at 5,921 registrations, and Joshua, which lies in fourth with 5,808 registrations.

The frequency of the name increased by 12 per cent between 2005 and 2006. If it were to increase at the same rate, while the number of registrations of Jacks stayed the same, it will be the most popular boy’s name in the UK in 2008. The name entered the top 30 in 2000.

Demographic experts say high fertility rates among Muslims compared to the British population as a whole are driving the increase.

Inayat Bunglawala, assistant secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, explained why the name was so popular.

He said: "Muslims from all backgrounds tend to be immensely proud of the Prophet Muhammed and his achievements and feel strongly that they should respect and honour him.

"Naming their children Muhammed is one prominent way of demonstrating their love for him and I am sure there is also an element of hoping and praying that the child will be blessed and will come to embody some of the noble characteristics of the Prophet."

Reaz Ahmed, from the Islamic Community Centre in Tottenham, north London, said many felt by naming their son Mohammed they were showing Allah they loved the Prophet even more than their own flesh and blood.

He said: "In the Koran the Prophet said, 'If you do not love me more than your parents or your children, or anybody else in the world, then your faith will not be fulfilled.’

"Naming your son after the Prophet is therefore a matter of faith and respect."

As a result the name Mohammed has come to dominate the market in Muslim’s boys’ names in a way that does not happen among the non-Muslim population.

Similarly, there is no dominant Muslim name for girls. The most popular girl’s name given by Muslim parents last year - Aisha, meaning “wife of the Prophet” - only made it to 110th place.

Mohammed means "one who is praiseworthy". Boys are often given it as a prefix to honour the Prophet, but are known by another middle name in their day-to-day lives.

The spelling Mohammed is by far the most popular variation, with 2,833 registrations last year. The spelling Muhammad is the second most popular, with 1,422 registrations.

Mufti A**ul Barkatullah, formerly senior imam at the Finchley mosque in north London, explained that different spellings indicated the geographical origins of families.

He said: "When you get the UK, it is essentially about translating the sound of the Arabic into English. A non-Arab Muslim would have the name ending in -ed while an Arab Muslim would adopt the -ad ending."

Although Muslims only account for about three per cent of the UK’s population, or about 1.8 million people, their birth rate is about three times higher than the national average, say demographers.

Calling children a bastard implies that the child was born out of wedlock. Where in the article does it say this?

"little bastards" is a figure of speech. Haven't you ever worked with children before?

ive seen a clip from cnn on muslims in UK. Some pretty crazy shiit. They said that they have doubled in size in the past 6 years. They showed the extremists marching in the streets and they even have a rapper who sings how to build a bomb and use it and its all legal there I find that so strange. There just asking for some shit.

UK seems to be really pc and afraid to offend them. I saw that too though. If it was the other way around people would be protesting in the streets

Sadly, that is the truth! I hope we here in the states never become like English in that regard though we are headed in the same direction.

No, they should control the influx of immigrants into their country in order to maintain their culture.

One of the fellas below mentioned something to the effect of controlling immigration to maintain culture. Culture is often well "maintained" and diversity can be a good thing. Yeh there's sometimes clashing but where there is it's due to intolerance, xenophobia and ignorance in general. A well functioning culture accomodates everyone. In my personal life, I'm dating a Peruvian woman who is much different than me and we have to be creative and resourceful in finding a common ground. We find a common humanity between us. We both learn the value of tolerance and compromise. If anything it's been edifying and broadening experience. I'm learning Spanish and I'm eating all this spicy Peruvian food. Irrespective of the gas and the heart burn, I'm all for it. LoL Let us not forget (or in some cases, let us learn) basic American history. This country was built on diversity. Maintaining culture by blocking immigration? LoL

The far right is growing in popularity in the UK for a reason, people here are tired of the PC crowd allowing muslims the right to do whatever they want.

The fact you find that so surprising highlights how much you know about France and its politics. Please don't fall prey to the silly American France bashing thats so fashionable there.

Just because they don't want a McDonalds on every corner and were sensible enough to not want to get involved in Iraq doesn't make them some sort of liberal "cheese eating surrender monkey" nation.

So you are 1/4 Sioux? I'm sure you do not speak for all American Indians. Just as I do not speak for the entire gay community.

    You're welcome.

I thought that your American Indian example sighted was in regards to culture being over-taken by settlers.......? I actually like the image of the American Indian being kept alive by such mascots.

Lol. Your assuming a role of spokeperson for the Sioux but I'm hard pressed to believe they'd want you speaking on their behalf. I'm sure you're a happy go lucky guy and nice but man, you are definately amusing with your presumptions and ill-sense of boundary. Best to assume that Logan speaks for Logan only! Trust me on that one.

It's quite amusing that you can lie through your teeth when you want to make a point. I live in the UK and have heard of Native American lawsuits over land theft etc.

Just keep lying, I can't be bothered to argue with you when you're so keen to resort to childish tactics like feigning ignorance of something that obvious.

Your assumption that I am the last one in my lineage is silly. Most are alot more conservative and traditional than I know you would like us to be. Do not assume that you know what is best for the American Indian, although as a liberal you probably think that you do. Trust me that no prissy liberal speaks for the whole of any tribe, even the Canadian ones.......

when we generalize in here, we back it up with facts. Until you do so, I will assume that you are just talking out of your ass.

What? I'm not assuming that at all? It sounds like you are assuming that I'm assuming. Then again, maybe I'm assuming that your assuming that I'm assuming. Now I'm getting confused. LoL
