    Worlds Best Guitarist???

Throughout most of the 20th century there has always been mainstream guitarists that you could point to and say, that is one of the best guitarists if not the best in the world, but however since the dawn of pop music there has been a sad decline in the amount of quality guitarists in the publics view due to people now going into the music industry not because of their love for music but instead for their greed for money which has in turn produced the infinite list of talentless fools many of which do not even write their own songs, and end up losing their fan base b/c they are no longer the in thing (ie. briteny spears, jessica simpson). There have been great guitarists in the past such as jimmy page, hendrix, clapton, BB King, during the 60s and 70s, SRV during the 80s, but nowadays it seems there are no truely amazing guitarists in the main stream. The best our current generation of mainstream music has to offer is John Mayer, whos blend of blues and pop has created his own unique style, but it is still lacking. My question to anyone who knows music is what great guitarists are their out there today? Some of the best guitarists of today that ive seen only do small shows or dont even play in the united states. Here is a few ive managed to find videos of on youtube that many of you have probably never heard of.

David Gilmour (still one of the very best), Carlos Santana, John Frusciante.

These guys all go back a while, so yeah, cant think of any new talent from late 90's and 2000's worth mentioning.

I'm glad you revived it. I don't normally listen to that sort of thing, but I liked it. Very good music.

Nuno Bettancourt (extreme) is probably one of the most underrated guitarists ever. Paul Gilbert is amazing as well.

As for the YouTube links by the OP, those guys are very skilled. Personally, I was never a fan of acoustic percussive playing. The first guy sounds like he misses his bass.

Then again, I'm a metal guy so I'm clearly biased.

I worked the John Mayer concert. I had heard he was a badass on the guitar, but I was surprised.

He was sick. He's the best of today, IMO.

Actually, I think USA Today did a poll on the greatest guitarists of all time and ranked Mayer 3rd. Don't quote me on that.

there are so many great guitarist that have advanced the art over the years that you really can't pick a "no. 1". everyone has their fav's but in the end everyone agrees to who is awesome and who isn't. john mayer isn't.

oh i don't disagree with you, but there is no such thing as "the best"; there are only masters, and each contributes to the last. i garuntee this guy had his influences from earlier masters... it's just the way of things. that being said, do you disagree with me that john mayer is no master?

The fact that you didn't mention Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson or Van Halen is sad. I would say it is easily Satriani and Van Halen with technical skills.

whoever made the rolling stones list of guitarists imo does not know their shit.

Imo, it was about popularity rather than skills.

I love metallica as much as the next guy, but I really dont think hammett is that good. I am not even sure that he should even be on the list, and if he should be, probably closer to 100.

I agree with all of the guitarists mentioned (with the exception of John Meyer!)

But thought I would add Eric Johnson and Buckethead to the mix!
