Dry cleaner wins in missing-pants case

WASHINGTON - A judge on Monday ruled in favor of a dry cleaner that was sued for $54 million over a missing pair of pants in a case that garnered international attention and renewed calls for litigation reform.

District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled that the Korean immigrant owners of Custom Cleaners did not violate the city's Consumer Protection Act by failing to live up to Roy L. Pearson's expectations of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign that was once placed in the store window.

"Plaintiff Roy L. Pearson, Jr. takes nothing from the defendants, and defendants Soo Chung, Jin Nam Chung and Ki Y. Chung are awarded the costs of this action against the plaintiff Roy L. Pearson, Jr.," the ruling read.

Pearson, an administrative law judge, originally sought $67 million from the Chungs after he claimed they lost a pair of suit trousers and later tried to return a pair that he said was not his. He arrived at the figure by adding up years of law violations and almost $2 million in common law claims. Pearson later dropped demands for damages related to the pants and focused his claims on signs in the shop, which have since been removed.

Chris Manning, the Chungs' attorney, countered that no reasonable person would interpret the signs to be an unconditional promise of satisfaction.

The two-day trial earlier this month drew a standing-room-only crowd, including many Korean and international media outlets covering the story. It even overshadowed the drunken driving trial of former Mayor Marion Barry.

The Chungs also said the trial had taken an enormous financial and emotional toll on them and exposed them to widespread ridicule.

Absolutely pathetic! This just reinforces my "dislike" of authority, stupid F'n judge sues for $67 million because the dry cleaners lost his pants.

Man that lawsuit was cray that guy should be ashamed of himself trying to manipulate the law like that to make money, i fhe's a judge he should be trying to be fair and just, how about charging the price of the suit pants? i saw him on the insider show and his suits look like they cost $200 bucks for the whole thing! so the pants are maybe worth $67 not $67million!!

If he had gotten his way i would have gone back and sued my dry cleaners for losing two shirts back in 2001, that would have sent me to retirement with about $100million?

Everyone is looking for the golden ticket.

When you sue a small company like that you are just gonna end up putting him out of business and you won't get a dime of that money. You are better off just asking for 100K then millions.

I have no respect for that idiot judge trying to sue for that ridiculous sum. How is anyone supposed to have confidence in the judicial system when they walk into his courtroom. The cleaners owner should counter sue his ass for being a moron.

The plantiff, Pearson, ended up getting what was coming to him. The Chung's spent $140 000 grand on their defence, which Pearson will have to pay from my understanding.

What a jerk, there seems to be some justice in this case.

BTW, the Chung's ended up finding his pants, he didn't want them back. They're holding on to them in case he changes his mind

During the course of the litigation, the drycleaners made 3 settlement offers, the last being 12,000 bucks, and he turned it down. Funny now he has to pay, that's the closest thing to justice I've seen lately.

He only has to pay for the drycleaners filling and court costs.... Not lawyer’s fees... he is out maybe $1,000 tops... He is the biggest ass ever... If I was the drycleaners I would go to every dry cleaner in the DC area and post his picture and tell them not to deal with this ass because he will sue you for millions....
