What's your bread and butter for opening the closed guard? I roll with a bunch of guard pulling MF'ers, and this is probably the area I need the most work on.

Laying flat, grasp his left thigh above his kneecap with your right hand and dig your thumb into his muscle as hard as you can. At the same time be pushing on his left leg and pulling your right leg through for the mount. While doing this be sure to control his right arm with your left hand to avoid the armbar.
that works for a loose guard. A nice tight closed guard and i'd put knee behind the butt as you put both hands on the hips and push away .
You could always punch him in the face, just a thought.
I could tell you about one of the best techniques to make a guy open his guard, but i'm stingy.

And work the knee-over-thigh pass after that? Or smash pass?Originally Posted by zimmy

It can be done from the mount and other positions. Start by stacking your opponent and grab his right collar with your left hand..now grab his left collar with your right hand and push it across his throat. You should now be making a fist with your right hand and pulling with your left hand and pushing with your right hand towards the mat.
He has three options at this point:
1. He taps
2. He opens his guard (which is what you want)
3. He peels your hand off, but this is rare ***ending on the skill level of the guy your are rolling with.
BINGO!
Works everytime, you can bait people with it too. Since your arms are extended, most of the time they will try to attack your arms..but being such a smooth pimp you already know that is coming and when he opens his guard to go for the arm, keep your right arm (elbow tucked to your body) in to keep him interested, scoop his right leg with your left and pass from there. This is assuming he attacks your right arm.
The variation on that when rolling no-Gi is to put both hands on your opponents neck putting pressure to choke him. Remember to stack your weight on him, the "power" doesn't come from your arms but your body weight.

Put one knee on his tailbone and leave the other wide so you have a good base, get a good grip on his gi pants and drive your elbows into his legs slightly above and to the inside of his knees and posture up at the same time. That will break their guard then pin their leg to the mat with one hand and run your knee through. Just remember to watch for the sweep while your postured up.Originally Posted by Quil

Good stuff, I'll give it a shot. Thanks guys.
There are so many variations for passing guard, you gotta really just read your opponent and try different methods to see where he is weak.
I like to use my weight/strength to an advantage over smaller opponents, I still lack the flexibility and conditioning I'm after.
Takes many hours of stretching/training I presume.
Focused on this method more tonight during no-gear class...must say it works well. I'll be trying Murilo's method on Monday for BJJ class.Originally Posted by zimmy
I'm also bigger and stronger than most of the guys where I train, but I need a lot more work on positioning and defense to take advantage of it. I'm getting better though.Originally Posted by I**mfkr
