Broken collar bone with plate and 6 screws

I was in a motorcycle accident right after my last week on cycle. I shattered my left collar bone and it required 6 screws and a plate. I no longer need to wear a sling anf the doctor said about 6 weeks to heal it back up to 100%. Any ideas on how much range of motion could be lost? Also do the screws need to come out in the future?

    Thanks.

Well my friend didn't shatter his collarbone but he broke it pretty good snowboarding. He took a few months to heal and then waited a little longer to come back to working out. He does have his full range of motion and is now lifting heavier than he used to with slight discomfort, but he doesn't have plates in his bone like you do. You most likely will lose a small amount of range of motion, and no those screws will probably never come out.

I dont want to sound negative but you will not be 100% in 6 weeks! The healing might be done but you still need to be very cautious and do lots of physical therapy with lighter weights and slowley build up to your usual weights and training.
Always be patient when its an injury like this man, better to come back slowley and recover fully....than to rush back in and end up in surgery again.

Best of luck you will recover!

Well, I am getting more and more movement back...it does come with pain though. I can feel the screws when I move certain ways. I am one month out of surgery. I am dying to do something. I am finally able to move my arm when I walk again. Looking forward to getting into the gym to at least hit the bike. Back to the doc next week

I was in a bad motorcycle accident a year ago, broke my shoulder blade in 2 and almost lost my left foot. I have plates and screws in my ankle, the surgeon said it was up to me whether I wanted to leave them in or not after I healed, he said most leave them in, but some have them out. I have kept mine, kind of cool you can feel the screw heads through the skin.

I finally got cleared by the doc to get back to lifting and so on. Lightly at first though to see how the one reacts. Turns out I have 9 screws in there not 6. I got a good look at the x-ray today. 6 hold the plate on and the other three hold the third part of the bone in from the side. I am so happy to be able to lift again. I felt so lazy for the last few weeks. Time to get growing again.

My brother broke his collar bone in an accident and the doctors didn't even discover it for two weeks, as he was in a coma from a head injury. That was years ago (he fully recovered) and he can feel where it healed crooked, but has no loss of range of motion at all.

The good thing about the surgery is the bone gets placed back in the proper spot so no shorting of the bone or any strange healing. Range of motion isn't bad so far. I did chest yesterday lightly to see how I felt, not too bad. Three weeks ago I could pick up a gallon of milk! I used a machine first to see how the pain was and it wasn't bad so I did 100lbs for 20 reps of 5 sets and then did the flat bench with a barbell at 125 for 20 reps of 5 sets and then some butterflies...they hurt a bit but I hadn't moved that way in a bit. I went to try dumbell press and ran out of gas. Today I felt pretty good. Feels good to have soar pecs again!

The plate is to aid in the collar bone fusing as it was before your incident. You will have no loss in range of motion as the end result will be a solid long bone which is what you had in the first place.

I got on hgh about 3 months ago and it has sealed the deal. If you can get some hgh, it will really help the healing process significantly. Since I got on the growth, my shoulder has basically recovered 100%. I also did some rehab at the hospital for the first 6 weeks or so. Then I did it on my own at the gym. Started light and worked my way up slowly. I am now lifting more than I ever did. Oh, I did some ultrasound therapy at the hospital as well. That seemed to help.

Good luck bro, you should be fine. I'm loving the hgh, so I can highly recommend that. Aside from that, stay off the motorcycles for a while.

I'm coming along nicely. Strength is SLOWLY coming back but I am so much farther along than I expected. The thing that breaks my heart is that this happened right at the end of my cycle and all the hard work must be done again. I missed the gym every day and I am glad to be able to get back in there every day!

Just an update....I am felling pretty good these days. All my strength is back plus some I think. Weight is back up plus a bit. Screws still bother me on a few motions and real heavy lifts but wanted to thank you guys for all the help and suggestions.

I am ready to get them out. Some day the pain is bad, others not so much. The bone is very brittle too with those screw in there. Doctor says no contact anythign until they come out. Wrestling this year is out, coaching will have to do. I am hoping to get them out beofre the summer. They really limit heavy lifts. Benching over 325lb hurts, 350+ hurts real bad, I thought it cracked last time. But all in all range on motion is good, cool scar and srew heads that just about pop through the skin.

I'll be looking to run a cut cycle about 6 months after they come out and i get 4+ months to get back in the gym first. Never done a cut cycle so should be a good learning curve.

    Thanks all.
