    insane back problems!! HELP

Here's the scoop: My brother (age 361/2) had a disectomy/laminectomy when he was 21 years old of his L3-L4 spine. He recently injured his back in May of 07 after falling off a boom truck falling 10 feet and catching himself as his feet hit the ground. He, upon MRI, was diagnosed with 3 bulging discs with one being fractured, severe spinal stenosis after years of lifting at the same job, and degenerative disc disease. He has had 5 mos of P.T., facet blocks, cortisone injections, uses a TENS unit, and every pain medication combo there is without pain relief. His ADL's have been severly limited and with a wife and 3 small children, has difficulty with everyday activities. He is going to Milwaukee for a discogram the middle of this month to determine if he will have a repeat discectomy/laminectomy(if any levels besides L3/L4 are affected), or if he will require spinal fusion. Does anyone have any further knowledge(non-surgical related) as to treatment to help with his back pain so he can have a quality of life again? Please help us. P.S. His wife is a Registered Nurse and is only familiar with traditional medication therapies and somewhat apprehensive to other types.

His doc will most likely want to throw some screws in and do a fusion at this point. Deca and growth hormone won't help as the problem is the disc pushing on nerve roots/cauda equina, not a lack of growth or lubrication. A disc can't be fractured, only the vertebral body can, I am assuming he is in an external back brace. The only thing new for a budging disc is controlled distraction machines that basically stretch you lenghwise at the affected level. These machines have limited clinical success but some people are going for this over surgery. It would be contraindicated until the fracture heals.

    agree w/doc sust

had severly bulging discs at three levels told surgery only option. Went to a Doctor of Chiropractic and had DRX 9000 non-surgical spinal decompression, 20 visits with interferential, ice and adjustments. Paid $4000, well worth the cost, hell my deductible would have had me paying over $7000 and the Ortho told me my pain would be back in 6 months, if I still lift. I am 100% better and still lifting. Every now and then I get a flair up, get the DRX and off I go. Check it out bro, might not be for you, but just sharing my experience. Good luck.

^^^ i never used the machine and dont have one in my practice, but i am going off of other doc's experiences and most importantly patients feedback from treatments. i wouldnt recomend buying a package deal for any doc, try the machine out, see if it works for your friend and if it does, than talk about a long term plan

    solid advice

Exactly what I did, tried a few treatments and then went for the package. The newer vax-d allow supine positioning were the older models were prone only, leading to a lot of discomfort for patients utilizing care.
