To touch or not to touch chest!!! that is the question..lol

hey guys, was wondering if u could help me out probably this question has been asked before on the forums... but my training partner and i disagree on 1 thing and that it to touch or not to touch chest. i have been told it is more beneficial if u touch u go all the way down.. but my training partner rekons no to touch the chest n to be at least 3-4 inchs away from the chest... it seems to b working for him he has a great chest and has been doing it this way for the past 3 years? ur feedback would b appreciated.. thanks.

i agree, when i go all the way down and touch the chest, i get this burning feeling in my shoulder so i just get to the point where my forearms and the rest of the arm is in a 90degree angle.

Going down so that your arms are in line with your back is the best way to go i find. Ensures that your shoulders/ shoulder joint doesnt take any weight so all the weight it is on the muscle all the time. Ends up being about 3 to 4inches above for me.

its all about what seems to work best for you..for the longest time i wouldent go all the way down. just to about where my arms were at a 90 degree angle and i didnt feel it untill i went all the way down. i dont bounce it off but just enough so it bearly touches.. just find out what works for you and go for it

I go down to about 2" from my chest. That feels the best for me. I hate watching people drop the bar on their chest and bounce it off their chest. It looks painful.

If I dont have a spotter I use a folded towel on my chest. I went down to far with the bar to close to my neck and its been a year so far and I can still feel some of the pain in my shoulders during heavy lifting.....

IMO Dont bounce off the chest...

I think that u need to do a lot of different styles to get a full work out.

First off. The reason most people don't get a full workout is because they have terrible form. And think touch and go's mean bouncing. A touch and go is a CONTROLLED lowing to the chest and exploding once it hits. Not leting it bouncing and then exploding..

There are lots of different ways to do the barbell bench press. And yes once u level off switching is a great idea..

Pause presses.. Lower the bar to the chest and hold for two seconds then push

Touch and go.. Lower the bar controlled to the chest and exploded up.

Half press... Lower to 2-4inches above the chest and push

Boards, chains, towels, and changing how u grip and where on the bar (wide or narrow)..

And make sure u are using proper wieght.. Don't lift the weight they makes people jealous if u can't do it properly... And if u are going too light just so u can get pump and not get pined down. Then add weight..

The best excerise is the one that's best for u.. Not what is best for somebody else.. Use the proper percentage of ur max compaired to the type of press u are doing and the right rest between them.. And anybody can have a prefect chest
