    Simple question...

I've lifted weights for sports on and off but I am hardly a serious body builder or weight lifter. I am familiar with lifting weights but I never got into it like some of the other athletes I was lifting with. Over the last couple years there has been a lot of stress in my life. Because of the stress my stomach muscles don't digest food properly, so naturally I've lost some weight due to this.

Because of the stress I also can't sleep at night, again I do play sports and work out so my body is tired and I should be sleeping but I physically can't because of the stress (sleep meds both OTC and perscription don't touch me) so because I get roughly 8-15 hours of sleep every 5 days my metabolism is in overdrive and this has also caused me to lose a lot of weight. In the last 3 months I dropped from 165ish to 140-145. I never thought about using steroids before because I only lifted for sports and never took it that seriously. I kind of look at it now as using it medicinally, I physically can't take measures to gain weight natrurally and even though I continue eating as healthy as I can with my crappy stomach musles and I lift as much as I can with lack of sleep my clothes are starting to sag and I'm losing way too much weight it's just ridiculous.

I was wondering if using a steroid in this cenario would be a good idea, again I lift but I'm not a body builder, I just want to put on some weight and get to where I once was before. I only am trying to get a little boost, and hopefully once I start eating better etc. I will be able to sleep and eat naturally. I've seen dumbasses around my way dose up on steroids for a couple months, put on a lot of weight then stop using and drop 10 pounds, I was wondering if there is anything I should look at if I'm only looking to put on 15-20 pounds, not as fast as possible but put on and keep the weight.

Thanks, and I don't mean to waste peoples time, I have read up but I wasn't sure if temporary use in this cenario is realistic.

Welcome. In your case steroids would do no good, the problems you are facing must be addressed. If you can not sleep and diet properly to gain to your natural potential, steroids would at best have very temporary results. In effect you would be addressing the symptom rather than the problem; your weight loss and lack of ability to gain weight are clearly cause by the conditions you stated, and steroids would do nothing toward addressing the actual problems. Good luck.

Your problems won't be fixed with any type of steroids. As you said, you don't sleep well and probably don't eat well either. Stress doesn't make you not digest food. You need to work on your personal problems so you can alleviate your stress and sleep problems. Maybe try to see a Mental health professional and they can help with either medication or counseling. Depression and stress can have either effect on you; Eating too much or eating too little.

Try to get these things resolved. Make sure to eat Healthy rounded meals. Cardio exercises helps relieve stress also and can help with depression. I'm not a Psychologists so that's about all the advice I can give you about that.

Steroids are definitely not the answer in your case. How old are you?

Okay thanks a lot for the responses...I figured it may have that effect but I knew cancer patients that lost weight etc. can be percribed steroids and was considering trying to mimick their dosages since in my eyes I would be using it in a very similar way but I guess that wont work.

I'm 19 and it's 100% stress, I'm not depressed...in a nutshell I live in a very abusive household and money is always a problem, I'm trying to work and go to community college and transfer out because thats the only realistic way out of my house...I've gone to sleep centers where they hook you up to machines and monitor your sleeping, they've told me I can't sleep because of stress, and the pills they gave me to help me sleep don't work so sleeping is a real problem. My stomach muscles don't digest food properly so I drink a ton of instant breakfasts, boosts etc...Good foods I can eat are pastas and cereal but most meats, PB&J... foods like that the texture just doesn't work with my stomach, when I force myself to eat foods like that I always throw up even if I'm on an empty stomach.

Ideally once I can afford an apartment I'm convinced almost all of the stress will go away and I can start eating and sleeping normally, I was thinking since that is most likely happening in 1-2 months from now if I used a small dose I could stop using when I'm in my apartment and then pick up lifting normally, kind of picking up where I was before I started losing all of this weight...but if thats not realistic I am fine with continuing lifting and eating like I currently am, it just would be really nice to have a little boost in this 1-2 month time frame of waiting, honestly without sleep I can only lift a couple days a week it's ridiculous how sleep deprivation messes up so many aspects of life...thanks again this was really helpfull.

Wow, I feel for you man. It sucks being in that situation. All you can do is better yourself so you can go out on your own, which is what you're doing. Might cause a little more stress doing that but it'll pay off.

Do you have acid reflux because of stress, is that what you mean by stomach problems?

Nah I saw a gastro(something...stomach specialist) and they ran a bunch of tests, the doctor said the stomach muscles that help digest food aren't functioning properly, and that is typically caused by I think it was diabetis or stress...and I don't have diabetis.

I've been in and out of doctors offices regarding the lack of sleep and appetite, I'm convinced medicines aren't going to do anything and I need to change my enviornment. Again I never lifted weights seriously but I like staying in decent shape...lately lifting and eating seems pointless since I can't even put on weight or even hold my current weight, and with sleep deprivation I can't work out like I was before I had these problems. I wish there was something more productive I could do in this time frame instead of 'waiting it out' and losing weight, thats the only reason I even considered temporary steroid use.
