Women and gay men are 'worst drivers'

Women and gay men are 'worst drivers'
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...03/ngay103.xml

Women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, a new study has shown.

Be afraid: Women or gay men could be behind the wheel of any car
Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.

Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

advertisementThe results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators.

Although women are more successful in tests requiring them to remember the position of objects, men consistently do better in tasks requiring navigation and uncovering hidden objects.

The research team, led by Dr Qazi Rahman, used virtual reality simulations of two common tests of spatial learning and memory developed at Yale University.

In one, volunteers had to swim through an underwater maze to find a hidden platform, while the second involved exploring radial arms projecting from a central junction to receive 'rewards' .

Dr Rahman said: "Men are good at using distal, or geometrical cues, to decide if they’re going north or south, for instance. They have a better basic sense of direction, but they can use local land marks as well.

"Driving in a novel environment which is poor in cues is where these differences are likely to show up most.

"Women are going to take a lot longer to reach their destination, making more errors, taking wrong turns etc. They need more rich local landmarks."

Dr Rahman added that a similar performance between gay and straight men in the radial arms test showed that the divisions between sexual groups were not straightforward.

"Gay people appear to show a ‘mosaic’ of performance, parts of which are male-like and other parts of which are female-like," he said.

I read a little further into the study for the same reason. It turns out that the original study was done at the "biology department at London's Queen Mary University. It was about gender differences in spatial awareness, not limited to only driving."

    That's ignorant.

Can they generalize the few individuals they tested to all gay men everywhere? Or does the test apply only to British gay men? Or only to the group of gay men from the one neighborhood they drew from?

The newspaper story doesn't really say anything meaningful. It does, however, serve the political purposes of those who think that heterosexual men are, as a group, "better" than either women or gays.

I know how we can resolve this . . .

Let's get the insurance companies to calculate the total $$$ value of damages incurred by drivers they know are heterosexual, and then compare that number with the $$$ value of damages incurred by drivers they know to be gay.

I wonder what the breakdown is for closeted Republicans?
I wonder how many wrecks Rev. Ted Haggard, Republican US Senator Larry Craig (Gay-Idaho), and all those other closeted Republican lechers I've exposed, have compared to heterosexuals, or for that matter, to out-of-the-closet-and-happy gay Democrats?

Ya, Newspapers can allege, but statistics can prove anything . . .

Spatial coordination has long been a trait thought more dominate in men. I can see how the findings could apply to alot of women. I can also see it applying to effeminate men. But since all gays do not display feminine characteristics, it is somewhat misleading.

    Um . . .

Well, I guess there's not much anyone can say to that. The Expert has spoken.

He's been carefully scrutinizing enough gay people to know that all of us aren't nelly. Kinda makes me think if we've already met in person . . .

I heard somewhere that doctors are the worst drivers

    Worst drivers: Teens, doctors, lawyers

Steer clear of architects, too. Insurance data reveals occupations with most tickets and accidents.
    November 18, 2004: 4:13 PM EST
By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNN/Money Staff Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - It shouldn't surprise you that students get in more car wrecks than those in any other occupation. They're inexperienced and lack a healthy dose of fear. Lucky for them that a doctor is likely to be at the scene. Medical doctors rank second in accident rates.

    Top five
    1. Students
    2. Medical Doctors
    3. Lawyers
    4. Architects
    5. Real estate agents

    Bottom Five:
    36. Homemakers
    37. Politicians
    38. Pilots
    39. Firemen
    40. Farmers

Oh you can bet the Actuaries already have that covered. I had to reinsure my car the other day in Australia and it now lives in a different suburb to where it was last year, literally 2 miles away and I had to pay another $100 because the zip code where it now lives has more accidents than my old zip code, now doesnt that piss ya off.

If your interpretation of flaming is holding people accountable for what they say, then I guess I am. None of what you posted above has anything to do with the fact that you add nothing except "yeh, what he said" to a thread.......

When you accept the fact that Logan enjoys being disagreeable it makes him easier to tolerate.

You are probably one of those people who thinks that FOX news sucks too, but have never even watched it yourself. Can't blame you though, it is easier to let others do your thinking for you.

Can't agrue with that, as I know that is how I often come across. What I can I say, I just can't let an ignorant comment go unchallenged. I sleep well every night regardless.........

Your right, Fox news doesn't suck at all. It's equal and just.

You know, for someone who usually responds with well thought out responses (although usually disagreeable), I can't believe you would even mention Fox news in a logical conversation. Fox news should be watched for entertainment purposes only (I know that's why I watch it), but don't mistake it for actual news. That would be equal to watching the Daily Show for unbiased news.
