Iran Tests Space Rocket or (ICBM)

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080204/...an_rocket_dc_6

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran launched a rocket on Monday designed to carry its first locally-made research satellite next year, showing the country's advances in ballistics at a time when Western powers are already jittery about its nuclear plans.

The United States, the Islamic Republic's arch foe, called the rocket test "unfortunate" and said it would only further isolate Tehran from the international community.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad read out the launch countdown before it blasted off to chants of "God is greatest" by an audience of officials in a control room, state TV reported.

The technology used to put satellites into space could also be used for launching weapons, but analysts voiced different opinions about the significance of Iran's latest announcement.

The West fears Iran is trying to master nuclear technology so it can build bombs. Iran insists its plans are peaceful.

Britain-based defense analyst Paul Beaver said the implications of the test may worry the United States and Israel.

"The Israelis will claim there is no reason why they (Iran) can't launch a weapon system in the same way or why they can't make a long-range ballistic missile," he said.

Television footage showed the rocket soaring into the sky from a desert launch pad, leaving a vapor trail. A parachute appeared to drop from the rocket shortly after the launch. State television gave few details about the rocket.

"This achievement will ... strengthen Iran's position in the region and the world," said Reza Talainik, a member of parliament's Foreign Affairs and National Security committee.

State media said the research satellite, called Omid (Hope), would be launched by March 2009.

    IRAN SENDS MESSAGE

"We need to have an active and influential presence in space," Ahmadinejad said in a televised ceremony as he inaugurated a new space centre in Tehran. "Building and launching a satellite is a very important achievement."

In Washington, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said: "It's unfortunate Iran continues to test ballistic missiles. This regime continues to take steps that only further isolate it and the Iranian people from the international community."

Western experts say Iran rarely gives enough details for them to determine the extent of its technological advances, and much Iranian technology consists of modifications of equipment supplied by China, North Korea and others.

But Beaver said Iran was making technological progress: "I think it is yet another indication that Iran's technology is moving very quickly up the scale."

Defense analyst Andrew Brookes of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London agreed that Iran was advancing but he said the test was nothing remarkable as the country had already developed ballistic missiles.

"We know Iran can fire missiles. This proves nothing new in terms of technology and capability," Brookes said.

But he noted it came just a few weeks after Israel, Iran's arch foe in the Middle East, tested a missile. Israel is widely assumed to have nuclear warheads and missiles able to hit Iran.

"This could be Iran telling Israel that whatever you can do we can do too," Brookes said.

Iran, which refuses to recognize Israel, has an array of medium-range missiles. It says its longest-range missile can reach 2,000 km (1,250 miles), meaning it could hit Israel and U.S. military bases in the Gulf.

Ahmadinejad has often predicted the demise of Israel but insists the Islamic Republic is not a threat to any country.

U.S. officials have accused Iran of aiming to equip its missiles with nuclear warheads. Iran, the world's fourth largest oil producer, says its nuclear program is designed only to generate electricity and preserve its oil and gas for export.

Hmm ok that makes sense. If they kill a women you go in there and bomb everything so no woman is alive to be killed again? If your enraged that they are hurting women bombing them doesnt sound like a good way to protect those women.

Mate, all your other posts, BNP this, get immigrants out, etc.

The BNP policies are bullshit. They want to make being gay ILLEGAL. They want to BAN muslims from being able to fly. They want to kick out anyone who is not white or british from this country.

Do you REALLY believe in all that?

Yes,I actually voted for them in the last general election. The problem with this country is its being run by the liberal politically correct left wing govenment. The country is full to bursting point with immigrants who take our jobs forcing the wage down, whats the point of having a minimum wage if the poles and eastern europeans come other here and work for less than the minimum wage.

Obviously joints comments only serves to bolster the agrument for Iran to persue these kinds of weapons. The US and Britain and Israel have these kinds of weapons.. why shouldn't Iran?

I don't know how the argument shifted to women, but lets not forget Iran has very little crime so there is less chance a woman will be raped or murdered..and when he says "Any country that kills a woman deserves to get bombed back into the stoneage." WTF? The US has executed women .. why would he say that?

If there are instances where women are abused in Iran there are these problems in many countries.

Agreed, Iran is a not a national security threat to the continental United States. If anything Iran is a national security threat to Israel, and I see that as not a problem of the United States, that the United States needs to deal with, but Israels problem. And as both are sovereign nations, I am in favor of letting them sort out those details. Why would we put hundreds of thousands of soldiers so close to Iran, this makes them more vulnerable and the United States LESS secure, not more. It's time we re-evaluate our foreign policy and stop meddling in the affairs of other countries. We should follow the advice of the founders. We have no authority over these sovereign nations. It is no different than colonial times where England declared the people of Africa as savages and claimed it needed to conquer them to bring them Christianity, civilization, or whatever other excuse they pandered to legitimize their imperialism. The same logic can be applied today. We would object to 300,000 Iranian troops being stationed next door to our borders, so why should anyone not be surprised that Iran objects to our troops being stationed so close to its borders. Do as I say and not as I do?

Simple, you write on line replies and insult members or call them uneducated. Without offcourse presenting any reasoning for what you are writing whatsoever.

Iran has the will to strike at America, but currently lacks the capability. That will change soon as Iran is working hard to develop nuclear weapons,. and it is now looking inevitable that they will have them.

Even without the Nukes, Iran is financially supporting terrorists hitting American soldiers currently policing Iraq, and carrying out operations around the world.

Iran at the moment is bad enough, and we have more than enough justification for an attack. Once they finish the Nuke program, oh dear!

And don't forget: the president of Iran has already declared war.

Well, even though your banned, I'll still reply to this. There is more evidence of Saudi Arabia doing this than Iran.

The problem is offcourse that there is not one single shred of evidence that clearly shows Iran has a weapons program, we can argue for years if they want to build weapons or not. But going to war on a hunch just isnt good enough.

There is a world of difference betwen having a nuke and having a nuke nice, reliable and small enough to fit into a ICBM. They will not be able to build such a thing without atleast a few test explosions to try out designs.

When has Ahmadinejad declared war? I would be surpised if he has considering the ayatholla is the one in command of the armed forces. Ahmadinejad is a cumstain whos time is soon over.

Who says so, a college student? Come on GF, how do you not understand that a country which SPONSORS terrorism is a national security threat to the US? Their acquisition of nuclear weapons, which will get in the hands on terrorists, is a threat to everyone.

It would be a non-point if we had better foreign policy which didnt meddle in the affairs of other nations, galvanizing the people and motivating them to want to commit such terrorist acts against the United States. I am pretty confident that if we were to withdrawl our forces from the middle east completely and end our support to Israel, who doesn't need it anyway, that Al-Qaeda would not have the motivation, desire, or the human resources to wager such attacks on our country. The root of the problem is bad US foriegn policy and Imperialism. Do you disagree? Are you one who believes they attack us because we are free and prosperous and they hate our way of life?

Bullshit, then they would blame us for turning our backs on them. The root problem is a religion that still thinks it is in the 6th century. We are infidels, which has nothing to do with any "occupation".

Infidels is what they call people who come to their land and occupy it, or it is a word that refers to crusaders, or it is a word that describes foreigners from the west and such .. if someone blames america for 'turning our backs on them' well than you can't please everyone..but those are not the people that commit terrorist attacks ..

and lets not assume that Iran would give a nuclear weapon to a terrorist-thats just baseless crazy talk, then why not worry about pakistan giving a nuclear bomb to a terrorist.. western intelligence believes pakistani secret policy help militants in afghanistan but it doesn't mean they're gonna help them that much..

Thats pure speculation, assuming that if we were to withdrawl they would blame us for turning our backs on them. Right now, here in the present, they attack us because we are occupying their territory, and we have been for much longer than the 9/11 attacks, and even prior to the 1993 attack on WTC. It's interesting that they are not carrying out these terrorist attacks in all 190 countries around the world. However they do carry out terrorist attacks in the United States and England. Perhaps it is because those two countries have troops on in the ground in their country. And perhaps it is because even dating back to the 50's we have meddled in their affairs and destabilized countries, and installed military dictators(Iran in 54, I believe).

I agree that their religion is somewhat twisted. It doesn't change the fact that without our poor foreign policy, Al-Qaeda and the other organizations would be hard pressed to find a great number of people who have the hatred and determination to come to our country and spend years so that they can carry our a suicide attack. Our current foreign policy further aggrivates the situation and galvanizes the people AGAINST us. They have said over and over they do not want democracy, they want an Islamic ruled government. Why not let those people govern themselves the way they wish to? I dont live in the Middle East, I dont care if they think they're in the 6th century, more power to them, so long as they dont come over here.

Cause and effect goes both ways. We will not pull our troops from overseas, ever. Your college professors are certainly having their way with you it seems.
