Large tuna has a high concentration of mercury....canned tuna is usually small

Most fish/shellfish has mercury in it. Nature of the beast. Personally I don't give a damn. Its cheap and easy protein....I do know that albacore has more if you want to get picky about it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) the EPA and other governmental bodies all have different so called safe consumption guide lines. They don't agree with one another to the tune of a factor of four (The EPA recommends 4 times less than the WHO). What is most telling is that they use a "safety factor" to set these levels. What that means is they find out the level that is known to cause damage to a pregnant lady or a developing infant and basically say "Well if X amount is know to cause damage....lets use a safety factor of 10....we will call 1/10th of X safe...". A safety factor is non-scientific guess that takes real data and just arbitrarily modifies it in a way that gives psychological comfort non grounded with actual experimental verification of validity.

If you *are* pregnant...or if you *are* a toddler...I would recommend avoiding albacore tuna.

If you are paranoid and have deep pockets you can buy Albacore caught by trolling, not nets...which Flipper concerns aside, means you are eating a much younger fish (they tend to be the ones caught on lines vs nets) which means a fraction of the mercury (Mercury levels directly correlate with the age of the fish and its height on the food chain).

You get about 1/4 of the mercury in troll line albacore vs net caught....but you pay for it. Light Tuna is the same mercury content as this troll caught albacore.

A while back I was having some "issues" which I'll spare you guys from having to read, but anyway I read an article about some guy who got mercury poising from tuna (college kid, low on cash, just like me...), so I got paranoid as hell and ended up seeing a toxicologist who ran a blood test on me. What he found was elevated levels of mercury (measured in ppb), but in his words "nothing to be concerned about". This was at a point when I was eating about 2-3 cans of albacore a day.

I agree with what was posted above, it's only an issue of concern for the very young or pregnant.
