This is a far more rational conclusion than some might think, after all the brain is the organ of the mind, thus molecular influences on the brain would be manifested mentally. If you brain gets the right signals from ingested chemicals, then you remain on a stable, adaptive course. If the wrong signals are received, then you’ll become unstable and maladaptive as exemplified in depression and many forms of psychosis both of which are OFTEN remedied via hormonal manipulation.
Most theories of brain and mental disorders ignore food and environmental chemicals that effect brain function. But your experience makes perfect since, because Psyche (mind) and Soma (body) are an integrative system. It is therefore reasonable to assume that bad environments and problems in the food or water supply can disrupt brain function. Logically, some chemicals can be an even more powerful hindrance than foods. For example when a fish in an aquarium displays psychotic behavior, you don't call a fish psychiatrist; you check the oxygen concentration, temperature, and pH levels of the water. It is cleaning the tank and changing the diet that restores mental regularity.
