just looking for programs that are free and simple to use to help make your computer run faster. get rid of all the virus's , spam and etc..
not really up to date on this kinda stuff so you can see how MESSED my laptop can be.

type msconfig into the run box

and you can see what is starting up that you dont need uncheck the programs that are not neccessary. make sure you know what your geting rid of though cause you can cause some damage

google anything in the startup box that you dont know

Run disk cleaner
Defrag your computer
update your OS
uninstall applications you don't use
turn off windows services you don't really need
if you run windows of vista adjust the visual effects (makes you computer feel more snappy)

Depending on what OS you are running, and how much ram you have, you can boost your systems performance a great deal with adding a stick of ram. 1GB of notebook ram is dirt cheap. You'll notice a day and night difference.

a bit off topic, i have a laptop and it seems to heat it quite a bit and the fan moves not stop, is there a way i can adjust settings so that it slows down etc.. like i said not that great with comps but i hope you get what i mean.

you ever hear of disk defragmentation or disk clean ups?? and no offense all laptops are garbage no matter what you get, trust me ive been building computers for quite sometime and i would personally never buy one. otherwise jacked if its really giving you a problem just reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. but you'll be starting from scratch.

yeah thats totally understandable bro, i have been building/fixing computers for quite sometime now and i just personally never really liked laptops. like i was saying if u have anything that you want to save off your laptop, make sure you save it to like a cd/dvd, but if you dont care that you'll lose everything, then dont worry about it. its going to be like starting from scratch the first day you bought it. good luck man.

No, not all notebooks are garbage. This isn't 1995. You need to get a notebook that fits your needs and requirements. Not all notebooks are created equal. There are good and bad ones, just like desktops, monitors, hard drives, etc...

I've been building computers for years too and I work in the computer industry doing computer security. I have both a desktop at home and a notebook. I need the notebook for when I travel and mine has been nothing short of absolutely reliable and trust worthy.

Msconfig to disable unwanted startup stuff, a nice regedit and some uninstalling, and a stick of mem are always good. For viruses and spyware, I usually go to trendmicro.com and use their free scan.

No program or set of programs is going to solve all of your problems.. Its how you USE the pc that needs to change. If your downloading little shareware apps all the time, or if your using filesharing apps and downloading executables then you have to change your behavior because its only a matter of time before your new install becomes 'infected' with viruses, spyware, adware, etc.. I'd do my best to learn how to clean that stuff manually instead of relying on programs to do it. I know its a pain in the a** but its worth it over time. One good place to start is to google all of your tasks in the task manager.

Dude... Linux is too complicated for your average user. Ever tried getting new devices to work on Linux? I remember having to wait a year on FreeBsd and Slack to recompile my kernel with a new driver so that I could just use it. and what if something goes wrong.. ever had x just not run and had to su in as root and nose out what happened? or what if you saw a chat app and want to install it.... but they dont supply binaries. so you have to ./configure/make/gcc... man am I glad I dont have to use linux anymore

If he really wants a computer that isnt as suceptable to viruses or spyware, mac is probably a better choice wouldnt you think?

I understand your bias completely.. I used to be the same way when I developed on linux before I started programming in Windows. But what you have to understand is that there is a big difference between business computing and home computing.. An average joe needs windows (or mac) because he can take his computer down to the best buy to get it fixed.. he can go to office depot or circuit city or any other computer place and actually buy software for it.. like a game, or the latest speech recognition software, or a flight simulator, or iTunes, or whatever.. linux would be ok for someone who stuck with basic apps like chatting, music, web browsing, etc.. or works in a niche environment like CAD or Gimp.. but most noobs are eventually going to say hey.. why cant I run any of the programs that everyone else runs?

You r fukking right Nstart. I too have been building systems from the past 4-5 years. Sometimes it works but not everytime. Even the spyware sometime screw a system which is in slow condition. The best is take backup ,format and reinstall.
Install a spyware and be careful next time
