    Eating large quantities of insects

Cricket Nutritional Info: 121 calories, 12.9 grams of protein, 5.5 g. of fat, 5.1 g. of carbohydrates

Mealworm Nutritional Info: Fat 27.2g, Protein 49.6g, Carbohydrates 6.9g (100 grams)

I eat mealworms and crickets. I can buy a 1kg of mealworms for £4 ($8), so it's a good deal. Also they're nice and crunchy.

Does anyone know if there are any harmful effects from eating too many insects(like 100g a day)?

However, if looking for sheer mass, pets are more effective.

    Dog (per 100g): 500kcal Pro 60 Carbs 3 Fat 24

    Parrot (per 100g) 345kcal Pro 37 Carbs 6 Fat 8

    Parrot being the leaner option.

Insects for consumption contain no pesticides in them.

Here is the nutritional breakdown of the minerals in mealworms:

    Ca P Mg Na K
    0.11% 0.77% 0.22% 0.14% 0.91%

    Cu Fe Zn Mn Se
    19ppm 43ppm 100ppm 14ppm 0.31ppm

Is it possible to overdose on any of these minerals by eating too much insects?

The only problem with eating large amounts of insects is the possible complications of having to much chitin in the GI tract. It is the main component of the exoskeleton of insects and is only broken down by micro-organisms. It can be thought of as a dietary fiber of sorts except that it is from insects. I know in pets like cats if they eat to many insects they can get a compacted GI tract. I don't know if this translates into humans though.

Ah, so I may get constipation in this case. Mealworms are mainly used as seasoning, not meant to be eaten in large quantities.

I've also read that lizards have been known to get fatty liver disease connected to eating too many insects.

I'd really like to know the dangers of this, since it's a such a convenient source of protein for me. (I don't eat mammals or fish).

It was already gross enough considering taking a fist full of bugs and downing them without the secret sauce you added to further increase the protein.
    LOL.

A lot of you are being ignorant.

A large quantity of the worlds population eats insects as a part of every day life. This is fact, not fiction....

    Agreed.
I wish people would be more more mature and useful, instead of un-constructively criticizing someone for having cultural differences/needs.

Yeah, I dont see anything wrong with it. Except for maybe what MuscleScience said. Thats the only thing that popped into my head when I first read this.

But pound for pound, they are more nutritious than any of the chicken, eggs, beef, etc, that we eat
